Odd Thing With Stop Light And Water Warning

Recommended Posts

richard

The 1.9 has a bit of a problem.

Driving along all is fine, once the engine gets to around half mark on the temp guage the stop light starts to glow very dimly. As the temperature rises the stop light gets brighter....as does the warning light on the guage itself.

All very odd. As its 2 seperate circuits. Kieran and i had a quick chat about it last night but it was pitch black at the time.

Any ideas as to what this could be before i get my spanners out again?

I reckon it has to be the switch itself although there is an outside chance theres damage along the wire leading to it which is shorting to earth somewhere.

To light up the dash the wire to the switch needs to be grounded (albeit with pretty high resistance for it to just glow dimly) so I am picturing some internal corrosion in the switch.

Last night when it was too dark I was trying to unplug the switch to see if the light stayed on, if it does its a wiring issue, if not its definitely the switch.

I'm thinking duff switch of wrong sensor type. If warning light sensor were replaced with a gauge sensor then I'd expect behaviour similar to this.

Doubt it is a short , much more likely to be a full on rather than a dim light. Still could be wrong.

a short to a very corroded earth could cause a dim light but I agree its not likely.

Mine did this, STOP light came on even though the guage was only showing halfway.

Shortly after my coolant promptly exited the car via the exhaust.

it doesnt come on...its more of a faint glimmer that gets brighter as the temperature rises on the guage.

Certainly last night (as kieran can confirm) it didnt feel like there was water in the chambers. Also as the temp goes down the stop light dims.

have you changed the sensors around at any point? it does sound very much like its got a gauge sender fitted instead of a switch.

bring it down asap and I'll put a meter on it to find out.
