SamGTi 0 Posted August 2, 2006 About 2000 miles ago, I changed the discs and pads on my 1.9 GTi. I foolishly didn't bleed the brakes when doing so but they weere fine until the other day when the brake pedal travelled to the floor and I didn't stop coming up to a roundabout. I had to pump the brake to get the fluid working properly again. But since then, my brakes have worked fine (although I have only done a bit of local driving). I can't bleed the brakes coz 3 of the nipples have sheared but I am supposed to be going to Pod on Friday so my question is will my car be unsafe to drive? I have done 2000 miles with no problems at all but now with this 1 non-braking problem, I am worried! And I don't have time to buy new calipers or drill out the nipples as I am at work. Urgent advice needed please!!! Thanks!

SamGTi 0 Posted August 2, 2006 But how come it's only happened once in 2000 miles? I realise it may take time for the air to reach the right place but I would have thought it would have happened more often than that?
TEKNOPUG 3 Posted August 2, 2006 That I can't answer I'm afraid. Are the nipples completely sheared fluch to the caliper? If not the you should be able to get enough purchase on them using a set of stilsons.
Jrod 7 Posted August 2, 2006 (edited) I'd fix it or not use it. It's an offence to use a car with known defective brakes isn't it...? Edited August 2, 2006 by Jrod

jackherer 543 Posted August 2, 2006 You don't need to bleed the brakes if you just changed discs and pads. Its only needed if you open the hydraulic circuit at any point which lets air in. If the pedal dropped to the floor you either have a fluid leak somewhere (check you havent damaged a pipe/hose) or the master cylinder is faulty. DO NOT drive it until you have it repaired fully. SamGTi 0 Posted August 2, 2006 Yeah they hace sheared flush to the caliper! Okay, okay, I won't use the car I suppose I knew I shouldn't really but I was hoping some of you lot could give me some good news! Oh well, thanks anyway!

Give it a check over, if it only did it once I would be suspecting a master cylinder on the way out rather than a hose leak, but you never know. Either way you're going to have to get the bleed nipples sorted out so you bleed the system after.
SamGTi 0 Posted August 2, 2006 Yeah, thought so! It's just so annoying that my car hasn't let me doen all year and now the first time I actually really need it to work it decides to break on me, 2 days before my trip!

It's just so annoying that my car hasn't let me doen all year and now the first time I actually really need it to work it decides to break on me, 2 days before my trip! I have a spare set of what I think are 1.9gti calipers. They were in a corner of a scrapyard though, so I can't be entirely sure, and I haven't yet checked them over to see what condition they're in (it's raining and it takes a while ) Anyway, if the nipples are free (I have a new pair somewhere for them too) and they look OK you are welcome to borrow them for a couple of weeks until you get yours sorted out - or just buy them off me -Phillip
SamGTi 0 Posted August 2, 2006 When you say 'set', do you mean fronts and rears or just fronts/rears?
