Crappy Brakes

Hi there.

 

I bought a 205 1.8 TD yesterday and the brakes on it are attrocious! I've owned a 205 GT too and that crap brakes too making my Fiesta's brakes feel like brembos! :rolleyes:

 

The car has 15" Speedlines on it too so plenty of room for improvement I would imagine?

 

What can I do? I don't use my brakes that often, I prefer to use the gears but want decent brakes to really stop me if need be as I have zero confidence in them for an emergency!

They got the bendix calipers on? Solid discs? They didn't feel to happy on my 306 either, but that's a fair bit heavier I would imagine.

I keep hearing things about Gti calipers and discs? What's the story with this?

 

(Shall a bit to confirm what discs it has.)

You could try some mintex 1144's, they were made a nice difference to mine, but I eventually just went for 307 calipers + discsto cope with the heat on some of my b-road runs (my favorites are all downhill!) Yours being lighter might be OK with just the pads though. Depends how heavy on the brakes you are.

 

I imagine as they are base model hubs you can use 1.9gti calipers and discs, or even go for the 307 setup, although the 307's add some extra weight which you can avoid if, as you say,your driving style doesn't put so much heat into the brakes.

 

 

(I have a set of secondhand 1144's with plenty of meat left if yours are the assymetrical pad type, after £20. PIc in the for sale section somewhere. Postage would probably be about £8 though, unless you are calling up north sometime/know someone who is?)

 

anyone spot the subtle plug? :rolleyes:

Thanks for the offer. :rolleyes: Are those pads for my type of calipers of the 307s?

 

I don't brake hard at all, quite lightly actually but I'd like some decent stopping power for when I need it.

They're for asymetrical (i.e, the pads in them aren't level with each other.) bendix calipers. then bendix ones are alloy and look like this if you're not sure:

Personally I prefer the other 2-piece cast iron calipers - the pedal feel is a little more consistant.

 

An overhaul of the current setup probably wouldn't hurt though, readjust the drums, change the fluid etc.

The STDT has 1.9 GTi discs & 1.6 GTi calipers, thats all the difference is. This set up on my STDT is fine & stops well enough even under heavy use.

 

Try new fluid all bled throughly & see if its any better, if it is fresh discs & pads might make a good improvement.

 

I never had any problems with the solid disc set up on my old diesel if you use decent quality parts.
