Picked the car up a couple of months ago and it had been sat in a field for a year!! It's running quite well but is it worth putting a dose of Redex Petrol Injection cleaner in?

Cheers

If it makes you feel better, never seen it make any difference though.

did mine with redex a while ago, whilst servicing it, and it felt livelier after, but i think its the fact i changed the fuel filter at the time.

it did smoke like a bitch as it ran through, so if thats it cleaning the engine then it must of done some good.

wouldn't of said that rolling roading it would notice much difference.

If it starts and runs OK,then it doesn't really need a thing.

Injectors have a habit of sticking if they are left unused for long periods. You will have seen an adverse affect by now.

If you are going to us an injector cleaner, get hold of a bottle of Redline injector cleaner. It does work and it has manufacturer recommendations.

Alternatively,go to a BMW garage and pick up a bottle there. Either by name or BMW branded bottle.

Decent fuel can have just the same effect, Shell Optimax has plenty of cleaning agents in it.

Only way to get injectors properly clean is by taking them off the car and having them done ultrasonicly (ASNU machine), not that expensive if you can remove them yourself, probably around £50.

Which is what I'd do. Cleaning the injectors is worth while from my experience with two 1.9 engines but never really noticed any difference from a bottle of redex...

Cheers for the replies :P

I run optimax wherever possible, so I think I'll just leave it be for the time being :P

Thats another point, does anybody see any benefit of running optimax/ultimate. It made absolutely no difference to my old 1.6 engine, except it just drank it faster.

So far ive never been bothered to put optimax in the 1.9, as it just seemed a complete waste in the 1.6!

indeed it does matt as 1.9s are ment to be run on 97/98 ron fuel. theres a few topics about it.

Unless you adjust the ignition timing to suit then it is a complete waste. From what I'm told the 1.6 runs well on 95 RON but generally you will find quite a bit more power from a 1.9 running on 98 versus one set-up for 95. However, this will not just happen, you have to aadjust the ignition timing otherwise it is all for nought.
