Best Oil Breather Set Up?

Recommended Posts

can anyone suggest the best oil breather setup for my car please? :) its an mi16 engine on throttle bodies and at the moment appears to be blowing out a large quantity of oil into the catch tank under load :D

the system at the moment looks like this:

using an 8v split hose for the main pipe and longer smaller hoses for the other two breathers, there are no kinks in the system and a comp test shows the engine to be healthy - its just blowing its load!

is there any better setup i could use please? or any other reason why its chucking so much oil out? (about 1/4 litre in half hour!)

thanks in advance for any advice/help :D

The compression test doesn;t show up the oil control ring's which might be worn or you might be getting so blow by, Worth doing a leak down test but this is normally a Garage tool but the only way with the oil rings is to take them out.

But it shouldn't blow out anything with your spec, it's when they rev over 8000 they do a little bit.

But there has been loads of different ways to set this up, But I run like yours but with a oil return from the catch tank to the bottom of the sump, Must be at the back near the sump drain etc

The rings etc were all replaced as part of the rebuild and the engine has only covered 5000 miles odd since, so I can't see that there's going to be a problem there, and the compression check (all around 200psi and within 5 psi or so of each other) suggests that there's no scoring of the liners from it sucking in dust or foreign matter.

With the engine running there's slight pulsing from the outlet to the filler but very minor, and holding the car off idle and upto say 3000-4000rpm reduces that to near enough nothing. It's not popping the dipstick out or anything like that.

The engine didn't used to blow oil at high revs before, and we think that it starting to do so roughly ties in with Kate relocating the oil filler location, although the breathers were basically unchanged in terms of plumbing. Does it just need the oil filler being higher up and a better drainback I wonder?

The oil doesn't smell a lot like petrol does it?

Just check its not been fuel mapped incorrectly, watered down the oil and burnt the rings out very quickly.

The oil tower location shouldn't make any differance to the oil blow by, But just to make sure place it the same height as it should be,

How clean is the mesh inside the cap and tower? might have become blocked and not helping things,
