Billy_boy 0 Posted July 29, 2006 hi i have just got hold of an Mi16 engine which has been rebuilt and done 4k miles for my standard 1.6 GTi. i see alot of people here own 205's with the Mi16 conversion. my question to you all is do you think its worth doing? and is the performance that much better? i have heard people having problems with fitting the engine like wiring issues and oil starvation due to tilting the engine to avoid damaging the radiator/bulk head. also what modifications do you need to do for the conversion??? many thanks Billy_boy
easypug 0 Posted July 29, 2006 Take a look at this, taken off the main site. Once you've had a look at that use the search facility and you will find out all you need to know about the conversion. A short answer to your question is, Yes its worth it.
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted July 29, 2006 The wiring isn't actually very hard imo, there are only around half a dozen wires needing splicing together to do it. To avoid the oil starvation problems don't use an extended lower mount as a cheap way of getting around the exhaust bulkhead clearance, there are people onhere that can sell you a modified Mi exhaust manifold (although you'd still need to adjust the downpipe) or the proper design Maiflow type four branch manifold that fits pefectly. Trimming the radiator cowling to give enough clearance for the inlet manifold is also easy & has been covered on here plenty. Like Dave says though, try a search as it has all been covered before in depth. Graham.

When are you hoping to start? I'll be using gti injection system with a dizzy converter because I have no loom, afm or ecu, but may be interesting to compare notes on bulkhead/rad clearance issues. Good luck!
danpug 1 Posted July 29, 2006 An mi conversion is seriously worth it, especially over a 1.6. My mi should be done in the next week or two, i'll take you out in it if you like seems you are only down the road.

Steve, Try and locate a loom etc, as the 8v management seriously impairs an Mi16 and you're only getting half the experience. I ran my Mi on 8v stuff for 18 months and it was idling all over the place, awkward in traffic and generally not happy. Since its been running on proper Mi motronic stuff, its a totally different car. Starts and idles properly and is happy to roll along in traffic too!

It will be a work in progress, so as parts become available and funds allow- it will run on mi management, This really is a budget build and has to come in at well under a grand- including the purchase of the car!!! ( It's close to the project PPC promised all those months ago)
