Can I Still Drive My Car Round With The Starter Removed?

Recommended Posts

Nathan

Is it possible to drive my car round with the starter removed?

There's a place down the road from me which can re-con them, so I was just going to take mine off and let them have a butchers at it.

Cheers

and just how are you going to start the car, bump it everywhere? Also I'm not sure if you need the wiring to the start connected up for other things to work...

Basically sounds like a bodge and not one to risk IMO ;)

but it would drive if you bumped it to get it going. we had an off forader that didnt have a starter on it for 4/5 events lol. just pain in the arse if you stall.

make sure yo insulate the fat live wire though..... could be flames galore

I bumped mine for about 2 weeks when the solenoid terminal snapped off my starter. It went on the way up to Scotland with about 5 others from Uni so whenever we stopped for petrol I had my own personal bump start team

It should be fine provided you remember to park it in a good place to bump it again, maybe a hill where possible then you wouldn't necessarily need any help to do so ;)

But yes definately insulate the live...

Starter went on my mates Vanden Plas 1500 TC and we did the same - only turned the engine off once we'd parked facing downhill.

Was fine as we lived up in Bangor and there wasn't a flat surface around!

Well I say it was fine - he eventually stalled at some lights facing uphill.

We replaced the starter later that day ;)

a mate of mine once spent a long time (weeks...) with no starter and always parked on hills. The constant bump starting killed his clutch eventually!

No problem doing it just be very careful with the live. Short it out and you could write off the car...
