Stripping The 1.6 Gti Donor -- And Using The Parts

Recommended Posts

mishu

I managed to strip quite a few bits from the 1.6 donor: pic, but I'm not done yet -- still have to take out the windshield, bonnet, front wings and engine/gearbox/diff/front subframe before I take it to the scrappy. After I gather all the parts, I plan on working on the rear axle and front subframe to put them on the 1.1 model I have. It's the best I can do (AFAIK), given that the GTi can't be registered.

Until then though, I have some more questions:

1. Are there any specific torque setting I should use when rebuilding the front subframe and rear axle?

2. Anyone know of a front subframe removal/refurb guide (the rear beam removal guide from the main site was quite useful -- as I hope the rebuild guide will be)?

3. I'm thinking there is no good reason not to keep the loom currently on my car, since I know most of it works.. is there any need of the GTi loom (or parts of it), since I also plan to keep the 1.1 (carbed) engine (for now)?

4. The dash -- as I read from previous topics on the forum (mine included), the dash from the GTi should work on my car (even though it's carbed), since it's just a matter of plugging in the dashboard loom. What about the speedo? Is the 1.6 GTi wheel size different so that I should expect a greater error on the speedo? Current GR dash -- GTi dash

5. The engine -- I'm thinking of rebuilding the 1.6 engine from the donor and converting it to carbs so that I could later put it in -- see here. I should probably also port as much of the cooling/oil system over now, since it'll save me from doing it then. Are there any incompatibilities between them preventing me from doing that (other than ammounts of fluid required and stuff like that)? Or should I just switch everything over when I decide to do the engine swap?

Sorry for the long post. This is the trimmed version. ;)

And thanks!

1. A haynes manual should give you all the torque settings you need :D

2. I think most people just give the subframe a good clean up and perhaps cover it in some protective coating, thinned down hammerite or something

3. Id keep the loom if you are planning on putting the GTI engine in at a later date, I cant think of anything you would need off of it at the moment if your keeping the 1.1 engine in, although the oil pressure guage on the dashboard wouldnt work I presume as its a 1.1 engine and wont have the right sensor

4. The wheel size wont make a huge difference, but will make a slight difference none the less, nothing to worry about though assuming your running 13inch wheels at the moment, the 1.6 pepperpots are only 14inch.

5. Id switch all in one go, rather then messing about now with the plumbing side of things and once again when you decide to fit the 1.6

Adam ;)

Happen to know what tire sizes the 14" on the 1.6 GTi are? Mine are 155/80/R13, they might have the same total diameter (wheel + tire), in which case the speedo would still be right.
