Air Con System

The compressor from my original air conditioning system is not working anymore and unfortunately it can't be repaired, and I think it is a good moment to convert the whole system to work with R134a. Which comperssor will fit straight on the 1,9 8V engine?

I know that 205 with A/C it is a very rare car, but few members have tried to fit air con on 205 and maybe someone know which compressor will fit on the 1.9 8v sump. Maybe I'll never get an answer, but you know... the hope dies last ;) ...

Only the 309 has the exact same model of compressor as the 205. All the pugs from that era use similar compressors though (either the SD508 or SD708) which are all more or less interchangable as long as the pulleys line up and the pipe connections on the end are the same. There are a few variations of pulleys and pipe connections thought so you'll have to compare it to your old one to be sure.

 

These are all originally designed for R12 not R134a, but you can convert them by draining the compressor oil and putting in R134a-compatible oil, changing the dryer pressure switch with one from an R134a pug (405s and 605s from mid-93, all 306s, all the newer models). You should also change the dryer too as the original will be contaminated with R12.

As Ryan said, the 205/309s were fitted with a Sanden SD508 compressor and the 405/605 fitted with the SD 709. You can fit either to the 205 and will have more chance of finding one from a 405/605. You may need to use the pulley from your current SD 508 because the 205 uses a double width pulley and on the 405/605 some use a double width and some a single width.

An R12 compatible compressor will work okay with R134a. Change all of the things that Ryan mentions above AND you will also need to change all of the seals on each pipe connection for HNBR ones.

These are the parts that I have already bought: new condenser, new drier unit(6455 R9 reconversion of R134), new switch(6455 T2 reconversion of R134), all seals(6457 V1 reconversion of R134), new tension roller and a new compressor belt. I have a new Renault Clio 1.4 8V A/C compressor(R134a compatible). This compressor fit on the oil sump, it use the same belt(4pk), but it just don't line up with crank pulley. Also the pipes don't fit, but this isn't a problem because I'll weld the pipes from Clio with my pipes. Is there any chances to modify/change the crank pulley, or I must look for another compressor(405,605,306)?

Out of interest, how much did you pay for the new parts? Did you get them from a Peugeot dealer or a specialist?

Hi Dan,

Your English is fine, much better than my Romanian :o. It looks like you have most of the parts needed for the conversion, the only other thing that I did was to get an adapter for the R12 service port( where the gas is put into the system ) to convert it to an R134a type as some ac service garages don't have the necessary adapter, these are only a few Euros.

With regards to the compressor, can you not fit your original pulley to the new Clio compressor? If not, then I would search out either a SD 508 or SD 709 from another Peugeot, this will be an R12 one, but will work fine. Or if you really want an R134a one, then get a SD 7H15 from a later Peugeot. If you get it from an XU model then it should line up with the crank pulley okay or you can get the pulley from the engine too. As you have noticed the pipes will not fit, so if you get the pipes from the car when you get the compressor, you can get a local company to make up new pipes but using the 'ends' from the rescued pipes. In the UK we have a company called 'Pirtek' who will make up AC pipes, you will be able to find something similar locally to you.

condenser(nissens)-150 euro; drier unit(from peugeot)-70 euro; switch(hella)- 150 euro, seals(from peugeot)-30 euro; tension roller(ina)- 50 euro; belt(optibelt)- 10 euro.
