Help Needed On 205 Exhaust System

Recommended Posts

matt1900

Hello people,

i have an 8v 205 1.9 on an 89 g registered car, quite a tidy little thing that has a few little niggles that i'm slowly sorting out.

one of these is the exhaust system on the car, it's a full stainless power flow, and dont think the speed of the car justifies it's loudness. and from what i gather a pug standard system would be all round better.

I spoke to a pug main dealer who said my chassis no should have an XU9J1 engine and so the front pipe alone would cost over £400 and looking the bosal pics this is because it's also a cat.

The bosal diagram however states that my chassis no is an XU9JA non cat system - which costs only £240 for a genuine system.

I've looked at my engine and cant find a code, there is a small plate at the top of the block just above the alternator, but there's no code on it, just some other numbers which mean nothing to me.

Just want to be as sure as i can be that when i get a system, it's right, as the genuine system has to be ordered and is non-returnable.

Any advise is massively appreciated.

Cheers

Matt ;)

There is no way that a 1989 GTi would be fitted with a cat.

IIRC 1989 was the changeover year from the 3 part non-cat system to the 2 part non-cat system. The 3 part may be more expensive but I doubt it's twice as much and you should be able to fit the later 2 part non-cat system.

For a XU9JA you should have the code DB6 written on the engine plaque (BD6 if it's a 1.6).

Isn't the XU9J1 the catalytic 1.9 CTi engine?

XU9J1 is a 405 SRi engine I think, not a 205 GTI one anyway.

205 1.9 is either XU9JA or XU9JAZ (the latter has a cat).

your '89 is going to be XU9JA for sure;

Mines a J plate without a CAT.

Shop around for better prices. I think the genuine ones are Arvin I think. Could be wrong.

The difference is the split in the down pipe.

Just look underneath and see if you have a cat, which you won't. so just order a 3 piece or 2 piece depending on what system you need as you are on the boarderline.

what's the point of going round a number of breakers to get a service item like an exhaust? To much hastle for something you can buy cheaply off the shelf and flase ecconomy when you have th go through the effort of replacing it sooner.
