What if any, are the differences, andvantages and disadvantages of a straight cut gearbox over a helical cut one?

I know that reverse is straight cut on most cars...what does it achieve?

many thanks,

fred

PS there is a 205 gti on ebay with a staight cut box....what is it for?

A straight-cut gearset is able to handle more torque. Hardly a problem with a Pug BE3 box ;)

The price you pay is noise. Listen to how any 'box whines in reverse. Imagine driving along in any forward gear listening to such a racket!

If you've ever driven or been in an original Mini that is a step closer to the noise of a straight cut gearbox. Personally its not thatbad, a mate used to have a Mini with a straight cut Jack Knight gearset & drop gears, that made some noise but it was nice imo (especially at 8k). Certainly hasn't put me off the idea anyway.

Staright cut gears don't sap as much power as helical ones, are stronger but downsides are the noise.

Graham.
