What Would Be Defined As A "rally Engine"

Recommended Posts

Hi

I was impressing a friend interested in joining the world of 205GTI ownership by showing him my own 1.9 8V which runs twin webers (roll cgae, single seat etc)

He asked me "so is this a rally engine then.." (not knowing much about cars!) :)

I said....well its got the carbs and thats about it....which got me thinking - what would be classed as a "rally engine"..?

Obviously running carbs and a rally cam would be the obvious things - but what else, as I really did not know, and I am sure some of you in here can help us..and also, what gives rally cars that fantastic crackling idle and awsome note as they are on full chat.

cheers

WRC engine, would be turbo charged with anti lag. the anti lag provides the bangs and crackles.

Usually rally engines have loads of mid range power instead of higher top end only power like btcc engines.

Any engine could be a rally engine if its used in a rally car :)

Gravel rally? Tarmac rally? They could be built to hugely different spec so no assumptions can be made on how it delivers the power.

Basically if someone says is that a rally engine, it means as you said, they don't know much about cars!

I suppose a true "rally" engine in proffesional terms is one built to compete a given level and spec - e.g. grp N which is near standard, grp A with more modifications.

My 309 is a rallycar. It has an almost standard 1.9 8valve - does that make it a rally engine? If so, my girlfriends daily drive too has a rally engine!

The only time a rally engine is a rally engine is when it's fitted in a Rally car, Same for a Race engine is when fitted to a Race car, Most champinship reg's allow different mods or even Std so you can never really say
