bren_1.3 1 Posted July 27, 2006 try catcams, but nothing O.E is really going to be very lairy. not like a standard XU cam anyway. possibly have a look at the 106 1.3 rally cam, or an AX GT cam? i dont have any figures on either of them, but i seem to remember those being mentioned in the quite "lairy" category. bren_1.3 1 Posted July 27, 2006 but nothing O.E is really going to be very lairy eh? could you explain this? O.E (original equipment / standard) there will be very few standard cams in TU engines that have the "lairy cam" status you talk about, and if there are, they're quite rare and difficult to find for a few pennies. Rippthrough 98 Posted July 27, 2006 your lossing it rippthrough lol for cheap keep a eye out on ebay I thought they were both the same cam! both 85bhp aren't they?!
trogboy 17 Posted July 28, 2006 You're bob on Phil, the XS and AX GT cams are identical as it everything else about the engines at they are both K2A (TU3S). Allanallen - as you are on a budget perhaps you could try and find a cam from a AX GTi. I think these may have the same sized cam bearings as the carbed TU heads. The cams from the later engines that were fitted to the ingection 106s, saxos etc all have larger bearings so they won't swap into your head. I think this includes the 106 1.4 xsi which is ~100bhp as standard. In addition you need a cam with a lobe on it to drive the fuel pump (unless you fit an electric one) and as far as I know you won't find them on any of cams from injection engines so perhaps the AX GTi cam is no good after all. (just thinking as I type) Alternatively you could look for a lumpy stick from a TU24 engine out of a euorpean spec 205 rallye or an ax sport. This is a bit hotter than the TU3S cam as standard and it has the lobe for a mechanical fuel pump. If you want some idea of the kind of spec cam you should be looking for why don't you speak to Matt at QEP. He knows his stuff and would be able to recommend you a catcam if you're feeling flush. Cams aside, what are you going to be doing about carburation?

Rippthrough 98 Posted July 29, 2006 yes so you should of replyed the ax gt is excactly the same engine, not question it lol Hey, i'd been drinking, you just confused me! Catcams have the best rep. for Pug camshafts.
bren_1.3 1 Posted July 29, 2006 (edited) i dont want a oe camshaft!!! kent or cat or piper? i wanted to kno the cheapest place to get one!! buying a performance camshaft "cheap" is probably the worst way to go about looking for a lairy cam, what specs are you looking for? are you looking for a race cam, a fast road cam? which cam has higher lift? more duration? these are the things you should be asking. not where the cheapest place you can get one is...........what compression are you running? are your engines internals modified? has it had port work? nobody can give you a recommendation until you tell us what sort of cam your looking for in your first post you said you wanted one cheap, cams arent cheap, at least not in my book anyway. hence the recommendations that you look for an oe camshaft from say a TU24. youve obviously not thought this through, hence this wayward thread, and not one definitve answer. Guest leegt Posted July 30, 2006 if you do want a standard OE cam i would defo go for the 1.3 rallye cam but also fit the inlet mani aswell sounds like throttle bodies also be careful when putting a tu3 head on a 1.6 vtr bottom end cos the compression ratio goes up to 12.1 or higher
stu_woac 1 Posted July 30, 2006 1.4 head on a vtr bottom end is no problem at all but you will want to put a higher octane fuel in so running is exspencive LOL
allanallen 528 2 Cars Posted July 31, 2006 yeah its a xs (tu3s) head on vtr bottom end bren 1.9 gti i dont know what cam i want? it needs to be used on road as a daily driver but still be good at the traffic lights not bothered about price! but surly some places are cheaper than others? so cheap does make sence thats how aconomy works??? But if you are interested I have a 205 Rallye TU24 cam. It has the fuel pump drive lobe. Catcams will do a cam for your engine. I think mat can get you one for over £200 somewhere..
