Guest tay Posted July 26, 2006 i am a bit baffled by this one. i started getting a problem a few weeks ago where the oil preasure light along with the temperature light a STOP warning light all keep coming at lower revs, anywhere under 2000rpm. the oil preasure gauge has always been up and down since i got the car but i never had any dodgy noises or any thing til the other day when it started clattering, i changed the big end bearings over and it seamed fine for about 45 miles but then as i started it up again it started playing up again. gauge going up and down, lights coming on again at low revs and a bit of clattering again. i ont think its the mains as it was sounding fine after i put the big ends in. has any one had anything similar happen or can tack a guess what it my be. anything would be much apreciated. thanks for any help, tay
luggy 13 Posted July 26, 2006 Possible oil pump problem? Did you check the condition of the oil pump when you did the big end bearings. Main bearings are normally pretty good on 205s but if the car has suffered from oil starvation if might be a case of changing the oil pump, big end bearings and main bearings, but then again you maybe better off getting the whole bottom end reconditioned. Guest tay Posted July 27, 2006 i checked the pump when i was doing the big ends and it all looked fine. the teath looked fine on the chain driven wheel and the cogs inside and the spring was very strong, but it dose rattle a bit when your holding the pump in your hand and i don't know if thats common or not. there was quite a bit of brass/copper coloured filings in the oil wich i think was from the big ends but i'm not sure. Grim.Badger 15 Posted July 27, 2006 AFAIK the brass filings will be the remains of some of your bearings, they seem to wear through a silver (Steel?) layer into a softer coppery layer. Once you're into the copper layer the bearings need replacing, and IIRC the crank will probably be worn as well. I also don't think the pump should rattle as mine was firmly attached when I was messing about with it the other week. Before you spend loads on the bottom end though check these: Oil pump pickup - May be clogged like mine was. Oil pressure sender and sensor wiring. Oil pressure sender and sensor themsleves as they are far from indestructable (replace the warning light sender with one from a 406 or similar in a scrapyard as this will only cost £1 and will rule it out fairly cheaply). If you do a search there should be loads of stuff on oil pressure problems, but I suspect that if your engine has started making noises and producing copper filings that it is porbably on it's way out. arry 0 Posted August 11, 2006 Sorry to bump this thread but my pressure gauge is doing something similar although the light doesn't come on yet and the car is running fine and dandy, no knocks or problems. The pressure gauge has never gone over half way and only works occasionally, and seems to be very innaccurate. Anyone got a peugeot part number? Where is the sender located and is it likely to be the sender thats knackered or the gauge on the dash itself? Cheers

Cheers Sender is near/under inlet manifold to the left, there's two senders in this area one is for the low oil pressure warning light. You want to be looking for the larger one, the sender for the guage.. looks like a mushroom type thing. Some folk have a bit of a 'mare removing it but I have a couple of cut down spanners, think it's a 17mm, which had it off in minutes. You can replace it with a new one or get a couple of 2nd hand ones to try. Just to check the sender was faulty I wired in a cheap TIM electical pressure gauge temporarily - run wires round outside of car etc.. and went off for a drive. I get good 25psi at hot idle where my original gauge was reading zero
arry 0 Posted August 12, 2006 That's sounding promising, cos that's what mine does I'm fairly sure my oil pressure is actually pretty good as the car runs a dream, doesn't lose a drop of oil and is a very quiet and smooth engine. I've done around 3000 miles in it like this now so I'd have said it would have seized by now Thanks
