Possible Problem With Airflow Meter

Recommended Posts

coombsfh

Not long had my GTI and although generally ok i am worried that the previous owner has messed up the AFM. I do not know what lies under the cover on the top (black flat one) but it has evidently been removed and put back on ith mastik. I believe this would be to fool about with the vane and variable resistor to make the flame kit (now removed) work.

I believe too much un-burned fuel goes through as it always smells of fresh un-burned petrol....

Fuel economy is interesting...about 20MPG and i do not drive hard alot at all.

What do you propose has happened?

Please help, advise and volunteer suggestions

many thanks,

Fred

When we first bought our 1,9 if drove fine apart from the slow speed/throttle kangarooing. This was really annoying. We sent it to a local tuner to be "fixed" he took the cover off the air flow meter and I think tightened the spring. When we got it back sure enough this was fixed. But along with it the mixture jumped from less then 1% to over 3%. The mixture screw was turned right in. The result was idle running very rich and a massive drop in fuel consumption when lots of idling was done. Driving the car on teh motorway was fine. This is easily seen by black deposits on the spart plugs after idling for a while. In the end we gave up, bit the bullet and bought a brand new reconditioned one from bosch. Now all is well on all fronts.

Hi Fred,

Welcome!

Do a few searches and you will find loads of AFM related stuff.

This may be useful, my own experience of tampering with an AFM and getting a result.
