coombsfh 2 Posted July 26, 2006 I recently hit a fairly sizeable chunk of rock at a mere thirty (just didnt see it) and have managed to bend a track rod...not an end, a rod. The chap who was busily sorting out my tracking said there is no point in fitting new tyres untill the rod is straight as without a perfectly straight rod sorting the tracking is impossible and without good tracking new tyres will wear unevenly. I am assured that the bend isn't that large at all and is negligable untill one turns the track rod and notices the slight wobble. I am pondering the posibilities. Do I: - >Replace the entire rack at a cos of about £50 >Try to replace just the track rod at a cost of £? but a labour of ages and a high knowledge acquisition cost >Ignore thir advice as the bend isnt that big and just go for new tyres now (F1's at £35 a corner) Any advice, tips and pointers much apreciated...... Many thanks, Fred
jonnie205 1 Posted July 26, 2006 If the rack is ok just screw a new track rod onto the rack. Not a hard job to do, or you could replace the whole rack with a pas rack for quicker steering.
Anthony 1,003 Posted July 26, 2006 If you hit something hard enough to bend the track rod, then I'd have a good look around and see what else you've possibly bent at the same time - strut tops dome very easily, you might have bent the strut itself, and twisted subframes etc aren't unheard of by any means. coombsfh 2 Posted July 27, 2006 Hmmm, I have had it checked and apparently all is well apart from this blasted track rod. How easy is a track rod to come by? And would a PAS rack without the pump make steering even heavier at low speeds? Sound advice anyway. many thanks Fred
jonah 1 Posted July 27, 2006 Is the threaded section bent, preventing the track rod end from being adjusted? If not, then there's no need to replace anything. A bent track rod won't cause any problems unless it's been dangerously weakened (unlikely in your case), or it's fouling against something.

Many thanks, Fred I needed to replace a track rod end for a MOT, had a go my self to find out it had been curbed quite bad and it had damaged the thread and i needed a new rod like you. (privious owners ) Found out its easyer and probly quicker to get a new rack, got one for £15 from a mate and he helped fit it. Didnt take half a hour.
