Just Got Back From The Rolling Road

Recommended Posts

SPGTi

Had a problem with the 1.9 8v stuttering and not pulling right so instead of just changing parts for the sake of it I took the car to the local rolling road (I have used the place for years). After an hour of altering the fuel/air mix, re tracking the airflow meter, checking TPS operation, checking the spark emmission etc on the diagnostic machine we did a final power run. I am not going to quote any figures as both me and the operator think they are too high but the important thing was the torque curve which starts at 3000rpm and remains basically flat to just under 6000rpm with max power at 6100rpm.

Driving the car now is a joy again with it pulling like the proverbial train in evey gear. The difference is amazing from when I turned up to when I drove (the long way) home.

Oh yes this cost less than changing plugs, leads, dizzy cap - the usual suspects fo the problem I had.

XU10J2 head Stevie? Whats the spec? Cam? Induction?

Go on, quote a figure! You have already says it appears to be high so we know you aren't trying to BS or anything!

Might put Seans figures more into context, especially if you have the curves!

Blimey, everyone seems to be at a Rolling Road this week! Yo uhave to quote the figures, you know we all love debating figures :)

Sorry forgot to put up engine spec :)

This is my road rally car so nothing fancy is allowed and the engine was purchased out of a rally car that had only done 400 miles (road not stage) before the complete car got broke as he didn't like FWD. He changed to a Sunbeam.

Details are a bit sketchy but this is the info I have

flowed head (XU9)

PTS cam

higher compression ratio (not sure what)

lightened and balanced bottom end inc clutch (gp N valeo)

K+N

OMP Grp N exhaust

BE 3 1.9 box with MI16 FD with Quaife

This is running on the std injection with std throttle body (regs don't allow ITB)

OK results came out at 154bhp @ flywheel 6100rpm with peak torque 137lbft at 4700rpm.

I have had this discussion with the owner for a number of years though, that the figures always read high when the ambient temp is high and I think that this is due to the calc done to get the results at 20C. The only answer I get is " are you bothered about numbers or the car actually running better and going quicker ?" Which I suppose is a valid point as he uses the rolling road for setting up and not really power runs. I would not hesitate to recommend this rolling road to anyone though, as I have never left without the car feeling sharper and quicker than when I drove in or an accurate diagnosis to why it is a bag of sh*t.

Realistically I would say the figures should be in the 140-145bhp area with torque in the 120-125lbft area.

Here is the GRAPH.

Just for a comparison, on the same rolling road I had another 205 with a good bottom end, head just cleaned up, with a std cam but higher than std compression ratio (due to excess skimming to remove some bits of corrosion) produce 132BHP @ flywheel.

which is the rroad? midlands is a trip, but there aren't many down here i trust any more

must say, i think he's got absolutely the right idea what's actually important in rr tuning - sounds as though he knows what he's doing as well

Hi-tech Motorsport in Cradley Heath , about 20mins from M5 jct 4.

Mick the owner can be as miserable as sin but was a racer himself and now does a lot of historic racecars. He can do most things from old school to new 3D engine management systems. As I was leaving another historic racer turned up that I was told was worth £1/4million. I have seen everything there from Historic Jag d type Le Mans racers to Ford sierra lightening rods for oval racing. He is also used by West Midlands Motorsport to set up their 205s.

As I have said I have been going there for years. Don't be too concerned about the headline figures just the improvements that are made.

Ah yep, I know Hi Tech. Rollers always read optimistic and on paper not cheap but he is quick once going and happy to take on virtually anything - seen some ridiculous stuff in there.

If you consider your spec is similar to CraigB's engine (which shows 150 on Mikeanics rollers) but without the big valves I would say your realistic estimation is exactly correct.

Now if everyone was so honest and discerning we wouldn't need to go by claimed RR figures because as you've demonstrated it's possible to guesstimate true power/torque figures from engine spec to within 10% which seems to be the spread of inaccuracy of rolling roads anyway.
