Hi chaps.

ok i bought my 205 with a worn clutch, got the gearbox off and found that i could see all the cogs and there was zero oil in there.

the car is a 1991 j plate, the gearbox has reverse up beside 1st, not sure if this is how it should be but htis is how it is. it also has the fork on a bar running through the bell housing.

i was informed this gearbox was a be1 gearbox although now i have no idea as i bought another gearbox (be1) had it couriered to me and it is nothing like the gearbox i took out, it has a ball inside the bell housing just above the input shaft that i take it a fork fits onto????

i know this may not be very clear so i've taken pictures of both boxes but i dont know how to add pictures to the post,

any help will be appreciated

cheers chaps

thats not right, it should have a BE3 with reverse below fifth.

however if its got a be1 fitted you must have a be1 gearstick with the lift up reverse cable so you effectively can now fit either box although you may need a new clutch cable and pedal to fit a be3 depending on what was done when the be1 was fitted.

anyway I'll pm you my email address, send me the pics and I'll attach them for you.

Looks more like a BE1 which has been coverted to the later clutch arm which you can do on these boxes provding they are made after 1988, The replacement box looks very old indeed, Cira 1985 so you cannot convert this one to yours. Also with the bellhousing as it is I don;t think it's off a GTi either, Many Gearbox Reconer's or scrap yards just sell a box not knowing what it is, But you can;t blame them as they just don;t know.

I wouldn;t convert back myself as it makes for a heavy clutch and it wasn't in your car orginally.

I'm surprized also the box didn't come with the fork attached.

But to check what the old box is, You should find XU30 or BE3 stamped on it, either by the Mounting stud/clutch cable mouting area and by the Diff case, also you'll find date stamps all over them.
