Sam 4 Posted July 22, 2006 Some of you may know I'm building an S16 Turbo to replace my TU engine (which is for sale). I brought up the issue of clutches recently and its come to my attention that there are a few big power cars out there running a standard clutch! Someone who recently signed up runs a standard clutch and 300+bhp! Theres another on GTI6 forum who has just charged theirs and he runs 240lb/ft and 300(wheels) on a standard clutch. I've been offered a helix paddle clutch with a proper cover also, but just not sure what it can hack? Also got a stack dash lined up for the car Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
TEKNOPUG 3 Posted July 22, 2006 Helix definitely underate the torque of their clutches. When I spoke to them about the limit of the 215mm clutch that I had for sale, they said that it was only rated for 165lbs/ft - yet the TT's run them as standard items at 170lbs/ft - and mine has been on the car since new from what I can gather - so that's 120k at 170lbs/ft on only a 200mm clutch! I think it's more down to durabiltity - you could probably run a standard Mi clutch with your turbo, but you may not get many miles out of it before it needs replacing. boeseturbo 1 Posted July 25, 2006 use a reforced clutch cover from OMP and a organic racing plate from Sachs... holds 450 NM on my turbo (215mm). Or use big flywheel from XM Turbo, and make a custom-made plate for the right toothwork for you BE3... and you have to drill out a little bit of your gear box. 235mm clutches rulez! Someone mentioned using a 306 HDI clutch as they use BE boxes, and run a 235mm clutch? You could use the 6 gear box with a stdt GTI-6 clutch. Those seem to be able to cope with a LOT of power. Could be good but Miles seem to give off the impression that they were weak, but I've never heard of any issues personally, lack of steering lock might do me in with 8" wide wheels :s Tasty Not half bad, thinking of taking the whole dash out and just running that with a cut down loom etc. Your cars looking good btw! Miles 331 1 Cars Posted July 25, 2006 Yep the 6 boxes are not that strong compared to the 5 speed, It's the cut of the gears thatr doesn't help and I've seen a few with missing teeth and yet to find this on a 5 speed one.
