Bizzare Mi16 Hot Idle / Throttle Cable Problem

Recommended Posts

Afternoon all,

I have a strange (but no doubt very simple to fix) problem on my 205 Mi16. When the car is hot and this ONLY ever happens when its hot / been running for a while...you drive along and pull up to stop at lights / traffic etc and the revs are very relucant to fall back to the usual idle position (1 k rpm), if you blip the throttle when stationary the revs climb and hold at whatever position the rev counter is at when you release pressure from the accelerator pedal. The revs will fall but only very slowly.

If I put my foot underneath the accelerator pedal and pull the pedal up towards me then the the pedal has some give in it and will then stop - the revs will always drop right back down to 1k rpm, this makes gear changes pretty interesting as the revs dont drop as they should when changing gear!

What would cause this ? Heat expansion somewhere? This never ever happens when cold..

Its bloddy annoying having to keep pulling the pedal back up towards its proper position each time you stop at some lights and I have been to lazy to sort it out until now!

Cheers

Mike

Have you checked your throttle cable then??? Sounds like the obvious problem

I have checked its free and not catching on anything that might restrict it when hot - but I can't understand why it start doing this when hot. When the engines cold (ish) it behaves perfectly.

It does seem to be a very simple physical problem with the throttle cable but Im not that mechanically minded and not sure where to check first.

Cheers

Mike

Would it not be a good idea to take the throttle cable off the car and check it for any cracks or kinks anywhere, then refit it making sure its not catching on anything or being retricted in any way. Then at the least you can rule that out as a problem.

id also add that when the cable is off try warming up the car and mess about with the throttle butterfly to see if it sticks still.(could rule out the cable for sure).
