Be1 To Be3 And Which Clutch

Recommended Posts

Guest gazz_the_lad

Hi all

ok my first post here goes.

the gearbox on my 205 gti mi16 has been loosing oil for a while, found a big crack in the bell housing.

its a 1.6 gearbox with reverse up beside 1st be1 i think.

i've been offered a gearbox from a friend thats done about 40k only thing is its the box where reverse it down bellow 5th be3 i think its also a 1.6 box

my question is does all the selector rods and speedo cable and reverse light switch fit or do i need to make alterations.

im also going to change the clutch while im here so does anyone have and suggestions on a decent clutch?

thnaks in advance Gary

it'd be a fair bit of hassle...most of the parts will swap over apart from the clutch release bearing which you'll nee the later type

plus you'll need to change the pedal box as the connector for the cable itself is different

thats all i can think of...oh and the gearknob

Hi mate thanks for that information, is there any benefit in changing to a be3 box,?

also do you have a clutch you would recommend?

cheers

A decent standard clutch will be fine, you'llneed one for a be3 gearbox but the only part thats different is the release bearing.

Selector rods are slightly different lengths also so they would need changing along with the clutch pedal.

Only benefit from swapping is the gears are a stronger design afaik.

Graham.

Here is a similar question that was asked on aussiefrogs. These guys (peter and graham) have modified the cable to save changing it and the pedal...

It is interesting that your box has a crack, as mine is leaking and i can't find the source... I guess that is something else to look for.
