SPGTi 2 Posted July 17, 2006 Well after a thread on what coilovers to choose I went for a set of Billies with forest inserts, 9" 185lbs/in 2.25" springs, with eccentric topmounts. The wife always gets suspicious when packages with car parts turn up but she never asked the cost so I am still alive !! I was looking forward to a good blast but the 205 decided that the engine was going to misbehave. Won't accelerate, feels like it needs a good backfire to clear itself. Anyway hope to be out on an event in August to try them out. With the new mounts the steering feels so much better !!!! Steve
Powers 13 Posted July 17, 2006 Looking good. It looks like your lower spring pan and locking ring are the wrong way around!
SPGTi 2 Posted July 17, 2006 (edited) Looking good.It looks like your lower spring pan and locking ring are the wrong way around! The locking ring is at the bottom and the internal diameter of the bottom spring pan is too large to fit the other way. You cannot see in the photo but on the lower spring pan is a small relief that the bottom of the spring fits onto. MartinM 0 Posted July 17, 2006 Still looks a bit weird though - the locking ring is is normally next to the bottom of the spring pan. Is the locking ring just a ring? What part is making the sleeve in the photo? Here's my coilover bilsteins (top-tip - the gaffer tape protects the otherwise exposed threads from taking a battering)
Jonmurgie 2 Posted July 17, 2006 Definatley looks a bit odd, here's what mine looked like (same as Martin's):
Banjo 1 Posted July 17, 2006 I've coverd my coilys in copper slip, does the trick nicely

Here's my coilover bilsteins (top-tip - the gaffer tape protects the otherwise exposed threads from taking a battering) The part making the sleeve is the bottom spring pan. The locking ring is just a ring located at the bottom of the spring pan. They are not Bilstein parts but Compbrake 2.25" spring pans with locking ring. MartinM 0 Posted July 18, 2006 Interesting - any idea why the sleeve part is so long and what benefit it brings to the party? It would never work on my set up since my ride height is too high at the moment (so the pan and locking ring need to come down about an inch) and there wouldn't be enough thread on the tube to allow that to happen with sleeves like yours PS I'm genuinely interested - I'm not trying to tell you you've got the wrong thing, honest...and BTW, yes they do look very nice and if they're anything like mine, they're fantastic on the road too. Her indoors will not regret you getting them!

Her indoors will not regret you getting them! I have no idea why they are like that. I originally thought they should fit the other way but the OD is something like 60.5mm so quite a bit too big for the 2.25" spring to fit over he sleeve. I will ring the supplier and ask them tomorrow. By the way with 9" springs the level you see equates to std ride height on my car. Steve

Steve Just to confirm, looking at your platform height settings with the 9 inch springs. you can still go lower than the standard ride height by maybe 40mm to 50mm ? Yes I can go lower. I will measure at the weekend is you like. The only problem is that when jacked up the spring will be loose at the low ride heights. I think you may be better with a shorter spring and helper springs. For me I need at least std ride height or the knobblies don't fit! steve
