Dan Ingram 1 Posted July 15, 2006 When I have my car on full throttle it hesitates a bit between 4k up to the limiter, it only seems to do it when its under load and I think it could be something like the leads breaking down, but before I go changing them all does anyone have any clues as to what it could be ? Also my fan keeps cutting in and the engine seems to be getting a bit hot but the temp guage dosnt get over half way, any ideas??
jackherer 543 Posted July 15, 2006 it could be the leads and its worth changing them if they're old, but a hesitation at 4k ish is usually the ignition amp.
Dan Ingram 1 Posted July 15, 2006 Ignition amp?????
jackherer 543 Posted July 15, 2006 its a small usually blue block bolted to a metal plate with a large electical connector on it, the position varies depending on year, what reg is your 205?
Dan Ingram 1 Posted July 15, 2006 Its a G reg, dont mean to sound stupid but im guessing it amplifies the ignition current, if thats right then why would it make the engine hesitate???
jackherer 543 Posted July 15, 2006 on a g reg it should be on the passenger side suspension turret, behind the battery, but I think g reg is the changeover year so it could be on the drivers side turret instead. you're right that it amplifies the ignition signal, when it breaks down you don't get a spark momentarily so no power is made. the metal plate its bolted to is a heatsink and there is some thermal transfer paste between the amp and the plate, you may get away with cleaning it up a bit and applying new thermal paste. Dan Ingram 1 Posted July 15, 2006 Thanks for that ill have a lok at it tomorrow. Also going to check the timing and the leads. I cant think of it being anything else
jackherer 543 Posted July 15, 2006 if you don't know the history of the leads and plugs they are well worth changing before they do cause you problems as they don't cost much, and the same goes for the distributor cap and rotor arm which could also cause this problem. a 4k hesitation is the classic ignition amp symptom though
Dan Ingram 1 Posted July 15, 2006 Any idea how much an igniton amp is new???
jackherer 543 Posted July 15, 2006 about £20 or £25 from somewhere like GSF I think. and about 20p for some thermal transfer paste if it doesnt come with any...

KRISKARRERA 2 1 Cars Posted July 15, 2006 a 4k hesitation is the classic ignition amp symptom though I reckon mine probably needs replacing then as I was getting alot of hesitation up the M5 last night. Though strangely it stopped after I got stuck in a walking pace traffic jam.
Dan Ingram 1 Posted July 18, 2006 Right I changed the ignition amp last night, I cleaned up the heat sink and put all new grease on but the car still feels like it dosnt want to rev. It gets up to the limiter eventually but seems to struggle doing it. Does anyone have any more suggestions???
Dan Ingram 1 Posted July 19, 2006 Right I had a play tonight and i've sorted it, upon closer inspection of the dizzy I found it had been retarded as far as possible. There was a mark on it which lined up to another mark on the head so I advanced it to the and bingo, its much better. I'll set it properly on saturday with the timing strobe but for now i'm happy. The only downside was when I adjusted it it increased the idle so I turned that down and it ticks over nicely at 1000rpm, no lumpy idle
