Are These Synchros Kanckered?

Recommended Posts

My mi box on my mi16 crunches on occasions and it now pisses me off as i'm unconfident in changing gear for fear of making a horrendous noise, not having much spare cash at the mo means rebuilding the box myself rather than paying someone else to do it, but not having looked at a gearbox before i thought i'd better have a practice first before potentially destroying my real box. So i roped in the expert help of returnofjim to help me strip my old 1.9 be1 box from my 1.9 engine to have a look at how these buggers work, so that when we come to do my mi box we had a vague idea of what we are supposed to be doing :)

anyway we manged to get it undone within a reasonable amount of time with the aid of the old school haynes manual and a hammer and chisel for the 28mm nuts :D (note to self need new socket for the proper job)

I hadn't used the box for about 6 years but i remembered it pretty much crunched in all gears when i did use it :( so when we opened it up we found this stuck to the large magnet which sits in the box to collect assorted metal debris :P good start we thought

apparently its a synchro spring but we couldn't work out where it had come from

we then spent a while poking about and figuring out how it all works together and which bit are which, which was all pretty interesting. :D

So anyway we figured out which bits were the synchro hubs and the pics are below, can anyone confirm that these are shagged? the teeth appear to be tapered and worn is this what they look like when they are knackered? does anyone have a pic of a good one to use as a copmparison? ie should the teeth be straight?

that looks simliar to the gears i took out of a low mileage s16 box, i assumed they were meant to look like that as the box worked fine.
