Anthony 1,003 Posted July 14, 2006 Anyone know how the wiring for the electric hood on a late CTi is done? The hood on Kate's is intermittently playing silly buggars and I had a look at it last night for her, and I've roughly isolated the problem but pinpointing it is difficult as I'm not sure how the wiring is done and I'm reluctant to pull half of her car to pieces to trace the wiring back. Basically, usually the roof will work fine and go up and down without a problem, and then you'll come back to it later and the hood does nothing when you press the button - no click of a relay, no whirr, nothing. Apparently sometimes if you leave it it then starts working again, as it does if you switch the ignition on and off a few times (but last night it was having none of it) which suggests to me that it's more likely a relay type issue than damaged wiring, fuses etc. There's definately power to the switch (2 x 12v feed) and I've tried bypassing the switch itself to rule that out. The motor isn't recieving any power at all when you press the button, but connecting the hood motor straight to a battery makes the hood go up and down so the motor itself is fine. Given that the wires coming from the switch are thin low-current, and the wiring to the hood motor is thick hi-current, I'm guessing that there must be a relay or control module somewhere - anyone know if that's correct, and if so, where it's located? I could easily enough rewire the system from scratch and fix it, but I'd much rather fix the original system for her rather than bastardising the wiring (bypassing/bodging wiring rather than fixing the initial problem is a pet hate of mine, and makes diagnosing things months down the line a right headache). pacey205 2 Posted July 14, 2006 Anthony Had this exact problem on my old mans CTI, apparently they do this when there is low hydraulic fluid but I think Kate topped hers up not long ago didnt she. I thought that was the problem on my dads but after topping it up it made no difference. However I then went through the wiring and on the passenger side of the (in the cutout to get to the rear lights) there are two relays for the hood. I took these of and gave them a claen up and a squirt of WD40 and its worked perfectly ever since. HTH Michael Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Anthony 1,003 Posted July 14, 2006 Fluid level is fine - on Kate's when it was low it tried to raise the hood but made odd noises and didn't work very well She'll/I'll have another look behind the passenger rear light for the relays, as I had a quick look there at the earths and wiring yesterday but didn't see any relays at first glance. There was definately no clicking from inside the boot from switching the ignition or pressing the button, so the relays don't sound like they're working anyhow.
