Coil Wiring

Recommended Posts

andymi16

1990 1.6 gti.

Need some help!

Am i write in saying there should be three wires attached to the coil?

Positive:

Power feed - but where from?

Negative:

Negative feed - again not sure where to?

112 - to tachometer

Afraid the current state of wiring leaves me no clues!

Any direction would be a great help.

Thanks

Andy

No, on a 1990 1.6 Gti (coil mounted on inlet manifold) there should be four wires to the coil plug.

I'lll check my old loom tomorrow when I'm at home again & post up what goes where from whats left of my loom.

I'm sure I took the original coil switched positive & used that for my coilpack feed when I fitted the MP3.1.

IIRC the other positive feed comes from the ignition amplifier but I'll check that later.

Thanks Graham.

This coil isnt mounted on the inlet manifold - must have been changed at some point, mounts to a plate inner wing battery side.

But the connections should be the same shouldnt they?

Thanks again.

I'mnot sure im that case, my loom is one for an inlet mounted coil so they might differ.

Shame the Hayens manual diagram isn't much use in this instance but from what I can work out you have three wires, #2, #112 & #141.

Wire #2 comes from the fuse box & afaik is the ignition switched feed, 112 splits off going to rev counter & tachymetric relay & then 141 goes to the instrument cluster.

I guess that #2 goes to positive & the others on the negative side of the coil as 141 also goes to earth. This also fits with what I remember from doign my wiring swap.

Thanks Graham.

That all makes sense, but I'm struggling trying to find the ignition switched feed.

I'l post a pic or two soon as i work out how to upload!

Thanks again

Ignition switched feed is fairly easy, either wire #32 to the tachometric relay (thin yellow wire), or the feed to the ignition amp or coil in the multiplugs under the dash by the heater matrix. (Red & light blue wires iirc.)
