Guest CJG122 Posted July 13, 2006 I am thinking of installing a sound system in the PUG which was prieviously in the Escort. The Amplifier however is quite powerfull - 400 watt RMS (1600 watts ?!?) What kind of battery should I be using. I have just bought a new 62 amp battery for the 1.9 GTI - would that have problems dealing with the power of the amp ? I know it is rediculously powerfull but it has just been kept hidden away since the Escort was written off after driving up a wall and rolling over a few times following a collision with a rover, it seems a waste not to put it back to use. Guest Lil Black Pug Posted July 13, 2006 Any calculations need to be basd off the cold start battery rating, this is the max the battery can discharge any therefore this is the rating that will govern the amp perfomance the 62amp is rate teh battery will recharge from teh alternator. In general 400w is not eallythat much, im presuming thats peak 400wrms power so in raelity it will only be peaking at 400 and generaly running nearer 275-315 wrms. Not sure what the 205 alternators recharge at but I would say you should be fine jusrt aslong as you always keep teh engione running when you have the system on. Thats assuming everything is 100% efficient, which isn't true, so add 25% on top = 42Amps The 1.9 alternator puts out a max of 70 amps, but thats only at higher revs. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Paintguy 0 Posted July 13, 2006 It'll be fine I'll be running close to double that on a standard battery and alternator, and I'm not concerned at all. Remember it's the alternator that provides the 'power' when the engine is running, so that's more important than the battery really. Add up the fuse(s) value on the amp, and that'll give you an idea of it's theoretical maximum current draw, but in real life it'll not draw anywhere near this. Even playing your system at maximum volume all the time won't draw the full current continuously, as music just isn't like that. You'll probably find it'll only average out at about 25% of it's maximum. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
NoodleVille 0 Posted July 25, 2006 nice post paint guy yeh deffo with the altinator thing i am running three amps in the boot atm totalling far greater power so you have got no worries at all running that amp off of standard altinator battery even if you did have problems a battery change is not the solution good call to put a system in there remember all these companys selling amps want to make there amps look amazing they do this by posting rediculous power ratings a good example is a rockford fosgate amp which has a rms power of only 30 watts per channel (2 channel amp) IMO is a far far far greater amp than a 1800 watt peak rubbish that is on the market atm Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
