Goodwood2Go 0 Posted July 12, 2006 I've fitted my old cam to the reconned cam using the old shims to do the Valve Clearances. Problem is the smallest strip on the feeler guage (0.038mm) won't fit between the cam & the follower so I can't get a reference value. The shims vary in thickess from 3.00mm to 3.10mm so I guess I need some in the 2mm-3mm range to put in just to get a reference value. So where does one get shims? Are they individual to Pug? Or if someone could lend me a few temporarily to do the measurements, you could have them back when I work out the correct size. Cheers Alex. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

PumaRacing 2 Posted July 13, 2006 Ferraris Piston Service or any other engine parts factor can supply the shims, possibly only in boxes of 4 though although that's fine for us in the trade. Under a quid a shim from memory, maybe more at retail price. I imagine they're a lot more expensive from Peugeot but haven't ever actually phoned up a dealer. It would be annoying to find out they're actually cheaper there after buying them from my factor for so many years. It's going to be expensive for you whichever way you do it. One set of shims just to get a reference measurement, then another set to correct the clearances then sod's law says when you do the last measurement they've all moved about a bit and you need to go up or down one size to get them spot on. 0.20-0.25mm on the inlets and 0.30-0.35mm on the exhausts btw. The Pug spec on the exhaust is unnecessarily large IMO and engines run quieter and smoother with my own settings. Makes the job a lot easier when you have a big box with every size in like wot us perfessunals have to keep Stock heads nearly always have shims in the range 3.00 - 3.20mm. Once the seats have been cut and valves refaced you generally end up in the 2.60 - 2.90mm range. That means I have about a hundredweight of useless stock sized shims which have been replaced by thinner ones over the years during engine builds. I'm sure they'll comeinforsummat one day though. Reprofiled cams rather than those ground from blanks to the standard base circle diameter will require very thick shims of course. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
