Gregg 0 Posted July 12, 2006 Just bought a very tidy K reg 309 GTi, only has 72k on the clock and runs very well. Not having owned or driven a 205/309 GTi before (more used to 106's) I was wondering where the oil and water guages tend to sit during driving. I have no numbers written on my guages as the handbook suggests they do My water temp sits just past the vertical position (3rd thick line) and creeps up to the next thick line when sat for a few mins (think cooling fan works, not 100% sure yet), will drop once you start moving again. Oil temp is slow to get going, just like my 106's, and is usually slightly lower than the coolant once the car is fully warmed up. Oil pressure seems a little low, only just getting past the second white line when running, although it gets there very soon after starting up. Any guidence on how 'normal' these sound would be useful.
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted July 13, 2006 See attached pictures for normal operating temps at idle & whilst revving slightly. These are from a taken from a 205 GTi but the 309 GTi shoud be almost the same. Graham.
Sandy 191 Posted July 13, 2006 I had three different GTi dashes in my 309XSi and they all read differently with the same engine. You can't regard the standard dials as scientific or consistent, if you want accurate gauges, you'll have to buy some proper ones!
Gregg 0 Posted July 14, 2006 Cheers for the pictures. I'd thought you'd say something like that Sandy My SPA temp guage is staying in the 106. Still interesting to know that there's such a difference between different sets of dials though I suppose as long as they don't go near the red sections I'll be happy. Sandy 191 Posted July 14, 2006 Haha, you said SPA, not me this time Gregg
inferno 1 Posted July 14, 2006 well heres the clocks on my gti, with the fans working in slow speed... and revving slightly, seems a bit warm to me, but doesnt overheat or idle rough so im leaving it alone!
Henry Yorke 269 3 Cars Posted July 14, 2006 Mine look like Infernos, but my oil temp does not get as high (due to alloy finned sump) and the oil pressure is about the same (lower than standard due to having to pump the oil through the turbo and it has had new shells)

Sandy 191 Posted July 15, 2006 The closest gauge between those two is the fuel!
inferno 1 Posted July 15, 2006 (edited) oil temps up as id just given it a hiding normally sits on the second bar. turbos run higher oil pressure IIRC, my zx used to sit at around 4-6 bar, and go up to 8 when cold. Graham, that seems rather high!one more bar on mines almost in the red... :s Edited July 15, 2006 by inferno
