Simon B 3 Posted July 11, 2006 Hello everyone, My 205 mi16's current exhaust system has seen better days - it is a mild steel system which has meant its got rather rusty and has started blowing around the centre box amongst other places. So, im on the hunt for a new system, preferably in stainless steel, and not costing the earth (unless its genuinely warranted that is!)..... What do people use and reccomend? Whilst searching about I came across the DES Developments offerings (www.des-developments.com), but has anyone got one? What do you think of it? After a lengthy trial period, we are now pleased to offer stainless steel GpN and GpA spec exhuasts to fit the 205 GTI. The options are as follows; GpN 2" with single 8"x4" straight through back box = £200+VAT GpA 2 1/2" with single 8"x4" straight through back box = £220+VAT GpA 2 1/2" with 8"x4" straight through back box and 4" round centre box = £240+VAT The exhausts have been proven on vehicles from high powered Mi16's up to 225bhp through to stock hatch rallycross cars and are proven to flow well in high power applications and meet track day / competition noise limits (GpA with single silencer excluded). As i am a regular track dayer I'd be looking at getting the 3rd option with the centre box to keep things down on the noise front! Any thoughts / suggestions as to what to get and who from? Thanks a lot!
smckeown 1 Posted July 11, 2006 you've found the perfect options. I'd argue your better off with option 1 unless your planning bigger power in the future
Dj_mini 7 Posted July 11, 2006 Iv just got one build quality is good and it looks great but iv yet to fit it so that is much as i can say about it at the mo
Simon B 3 Posted July 11, 2006 Thanks guys!! I was wondering about sizing.... not really planning bigger power at the moment as this is my spare track toy.... but Option 1 has no centre box so may be too noisy for track days? I would have preferred a 2.25" system really LOL.
Veero 1 Posted July 12, 2006 So are these designed for the 8v or can they be ordered ready to go on the Mi16 in the 205 (even with a QEP plate?). My bodged 205 exhaust is starting to rust badly and piss me off so might be after something like this. Option 3 with the 2 silencers, would taht be fine for daily road use? Simon B 3 Posted July 12, 2006 Come on people, more input required!! Is 2" adequate for a standard ish Mi16 engine? What other systems come reccomended?

petert 586 Posted July 14, 2006 I wouldn't do any of them. 2.5" is way too big and 2" is marginal for a 7500 rpm 1.9L engine. My favourite is 2.25" with straight through rear and the round centre box. If it's still too noisey you can always fit a 2" tail pipe. Surprisingly that quietens them down considerably. C_W 3 1 Cars Posted July 14, 2006 My standard Mi16 has 2" Jetex system but the downpipe to mid-box pipe is smaller, think it's around 48mm as its baggy in the sleeve for the box.
Simon B 3 Posted July 14, 2006 Ok so where to get a good 2.25" stainless steel system?
petert 586 Posted July 14, 2006 Don't you have an exhaust shop nearby?
dodsworth_gti 11 Posted July 14, 2006 would these systems go on my 1.6???

paul wicks 0 Posted July 14, 2006 I have the below exhaust off DES, mine was the prototype, quiality is great, sounds spot on, not too deep and not tinny, ok my car has carbs, but sounds like a an the 1980's Escort Mark 2 rally car. Always hard to describe sound in words though. It isnt too loud, thanks to the centre box which i chose to keep mr plod happy (had one previous run in which wasted an hour of my day). GpA 2 1/2" with 8"x4" straight through back box and 4" round centre box = £240+VAT Really there isnt any other exhuast I would go for. If you have a standardish 205 Mi16 I would go for the Group N spec one, which Neal at DES has on his car. He has sold quite a few of these exhausts.
maxi 36 1 Cars Posted July 15, 2006 I run a GTi6 manifold from an XU10J4RS that I personally modified to fit an XU9J4 head with a STANDARD (yes I did say STANDARD!!!) BOSAL 205GTi system for a 1600. You dont need a silly go fast super expensive at that performance level. Just dont listen to the normal dogs*it about having the split in the downpipe, you want NO split trust me. I have done loads of mis and the ones with no split go a LOT better. Just to add, my car 216BHP and 174Ibft of torque, so a std sytem is not restrictive at all. Simon B 3 Posted July 15, 2006 So a 2" exhaust system (or whatever size a standard one) is up to the job on a standard mi16 engine and then some? Do many people on here run the Pug Sport Grp N system on Mi16 engines?
boombang 2 Posted July 15, 2006 I ran an old style grp N Pugsport on my 309. Aside from it needing chopping + welding to fit it was fine, but at the price they are now its just not worth it. Torque was ample and dead flat 5k - 7k with no drop off, and power was over 170bhp (ran re-pro cams and raised comp ratio).

You guys don't see many V8's in the UK? A single 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust is the perfect size for 5L V8 that revs to 6000 and makes 200+kW. Do the sums. It's just way too big for a 2L normally aspirated engine. You loose so much torque. But then again, if you're looking for something a bit ricey............ Simon B 3 Posted July 17, 2006 What size is a Magnex system for the 205? 2" or 2.25"? They are usually good quality and not overly loud systems in my previous experience with them..........

Maxi Agree with most of that, I've always had standard downpipes and now the downpipe to mid-box pipe is 48mm outer diamter so its baggy in the 2" mid-box sleeve. Performance seems fine to me. However, I reckon the split might make a slight difference, it seemed to on mine torque-wise going from no split to a split.
