Man3 0 Posted July 11, 2006 (edited) My runaround is a ZX TD and recently the cooling system has persistently been getting airlocked and then overheating. I bled the system yesterday and there was a lot of air bled out, i have now had to do the same today, only this time there is no sign of the air being bled out of the system as it seems to be impossible to get a constant stream of coolant. If i rev the engine whilst bleeding the system then i just get a foamy mess coming out. Am i right in thinking that the head catsing is well and truly shagged? Anyone got a spare diesel head? Cheers Joe Also, are TD heads the same as the NA ones? And are all pre HDI heads the same? Edited July 11, 2006 by Man3
hexhamstu 9 Posted July 11, 2006 could just be the headgasket.
Man3 0 Posted July 11, 2006 That was my initial thought but there is no smoke or water/oil contamination
jim21070 2 Posted July 11, 2006 That was my initial thought but there is no smoke or water/oil contamination It will be the head gasket. You have the classical symptoms. It is not unusual to have no oil/water contamination. It is recommended to have the head checked and lightly skimmed if necessary. Give the valves a lap too whilst they're nicely accessible and check valve clearances. Most XUD head gasket failures are caused by external factors so check the rad, fan and stat anre all in top condition.
Man3 0 Posted July 11, 2006 Ok, cheers. In the event of the head being beyond a skim, does anyone know the answer to my question about which heads are suitable as replacement?
jim21070 2 Posted July 11, 2006 (edited) Any 1.9TD head will do. They're all much the same. Choose from: any Post-1992 Pug 405TD, 306TD, 406 1.9TD, Citroen Xantia 1.9TD (Not the 2.1!), ZX TD, Rover 218 maybe if it is a Turbo.. Pre 1992 XUDs had a totally different vacuum pump drive arrangement using a vee belt and I don't think the later direct-drive vacuum pump can be fitted to these. What I'm trying to say here is that any XUD9TE head will do but NOT the head from a Normally Aspirated XUD9 or 7 or the XUD7T as found in early 405 TDs and 205TDs. If you get one from a Xantia, it will not have a vacuum pump on the right side of the head but I believe the pump can be fitted as the drive for the pump is there under a blanking cover. Braking power on these come from a hydraulic pump and not from a vacuum servo. HTH Edited July 11, 2006 by jim21070
