The rear disc setup on the 1.9 is really easy to work on, so much easier (for everything) than brake drums.

The cables aren't that expensive, about £10 each?? Fitting is easy; unscrew 3 screws holding the handbrake surround and remove it (takes a bit of waggling!).

Then slacken off the 13mm nut on the threaded bar at the back of the handbrake to near the end of the thread; this should give you enough slack to remove the cables from the calipers.

Unclip the cable ends from the caliper by pulling the ends with mole grips/plieres and unhooking them through the slot.

Then use a hammer and a drift and tap the cables out of the cable stop on the calipers. This can sometimes be the difficult bit as they can sieze in but they do move.

Then just unclip from the underbody (though this is normally done for you already on a 205 ) and makes sure the cables unhook out of the handbrake mechanism.

Refit the new ones in the handbrake mech first then into the calipers then tension the cables by retightening the 13mm nut on the handbrake.

cables are £6.50 each and fitting should take a garage half an hour, so I don't know where they got £100 from

£100? Ha ha ha ha ha haaaaaaaa!! What is their hourly labour rate? It must be about £160 per hour cos it is a half hour job. Even a sad office boy like me found it a piece of piss to do!

v easy job - £100 to fit is taking the michael!

genuine pug cables aren't expensive and fit better than the pattern ones. they're handed and one's longer than the other - if you use two the same length, they apparently fit better - but I can't remember if it's two long ones or two short ones you want

I've got a pair of 1.9 cables if you want them. One is brand new. You can have them both for £7.00 delivered to your door. Let me know and I'll send them straight out to you. :)

Super Josh

Might be worth soaking the cable stop on the calipers with something like plus gas, the night before. Just to make drifting them out a little easier. Sometimes they also get a little resistant where the go up through the floorpan to the handbrake lever, again, maybe a little plus gas and rotate then with a pair of mole grips to free them off.
