Impressions Of Pas Rack (- Ram) Upgrade.

Recommended Posts

Higgy

Hi,

I fitted my PAS rack minus all the actual power assistance bits last week, and have only just got to try the car out over the weekend.

Initial impressions are that it is a worthwhile upgrade. Steering is a slightly heavier, but the extra turn in you gain is great.

I found it very noticable the extra amount that the car turns in. No more feeding the steering wheel round

Why Pug could not fit a quicker rack to their GTi model is beyond me.

Hi Higgy, I looked at doing this, but was not clear on one issue which i wonder if you could answer for me. Does the steering lock reduce with out the ram compared to the same rack fitted with the ram?

Thanks

PAS rack has same lock with or without the ram fitted.

Because the PAS rack has less turns than the non PAS rack. So you get a slightly 'quicker' rack without the power assistance that some people think reduces the steering feedback.

i have the PAS retrofitted 2 years ago, steering feedback is reduced a bit but still much stronger than the japs car. the PAS is a happier and easier for you to live with device especially when you are fighting the opposite lock. :D

can't remember whether it's quicker or not now. :)

I must say the PAS on my 405 GLX is weighted very well and quite heavy.

You get quite a lot of feedback through it. Handy when your chasing Anthony's 309 through roundabouts and you only have 175 width tyres & 1100kg to hustle :)
