Setting Up Idle From Scratch

Recommended Posts

methebmxer

Ok I've read through some very usefull stuff to do with the ignition timing, throttle body idle screw and AFM screw but I was hoping to find something to tell me how to adjust all three as having just fitted a 1.9 engine I need to now get it running well but do'nt know where to start. I basicaly want everything to cooperate and not have one thing compensating for another thats wrongly adjusted. Also is there anything else I should take in to account. I hope there is a simple enough way of setting it all up from scratch as at the moment it runs but I'm sure it should be smoother.

Or ignoring all that would anyone suggest leaving it to a garage to sort out and if so how much would you expect it to cost?. I do'nt want to have to go down that route as it seems like giving up and after fitting the damn engine myself I want the pleasure of getting it purrrring sweet myself.

There is a book setting for the timing.

Use this to set it up, but this setiing isn't the best, but its a start.

You'll need a timing strobe to set it up though.

As for the AFM I think the starting point is fully wound in then 2.5 turns out.

The idle is then set to 750 RPM, but in My opinion it needs to be around 1000 RPM.

If you get really into finding the best setting buy a Gunson Gas tester to get the mixture just right.

They're about £60 new £30+ from ebay.

Check your SAD is working propperly too.
