Engine Running In - Fao Dave Baker

Dave,

I have read your posts on running in period, and the statements seem to be slightly conflicting, here they are, can you conform what is applicable to my engine:

Statement 1:

Running in is very simple. 15 minutes on the drive at 2500 rpm to bed in new cams if applicable. Then a few brief full throttle bursts in a high gear to bed the rings in hard. Finally 50 miles or two hours of gradually increasing throttle and rpm, chuck the cheap running in oil and filter, put in something better but still not a fully synthetic oil and drive as hard as you like. After 1000 miles swap to your long term oil once the bores are glazed up.

Statement 2:

The first oil fill for the 100 miles break in period should just be a half decent non synthetic. It doesn't really matter too much. It's only purpose is to allow break in of the high spots while the engine isn't being used too hard. A synthetic oil can lubricate so well it prevents proper break in. The next fill should be whatever you want to use long term.

shouldn't you be talking to DB directly if its regarding an engine he built for you?

I don't see the conflict myself they both say cheap oil to start with, better once its run in. maybe the oilman can advise you better with regards your oil needs?

As far as I can see the only conflict is the mileage done on teh mineral oil at the start ?

If it was me Id prob just do 100 miles on the mineral oil before swapping into the next stage that DB suggests.

When I ran mine in I did approx 300miles on the mineral oil with varying (but under 4k) revs along with some bursts to make sure the rings were bedded in. Then I swapped from some semi-synth Millers oil on which I am now just driving normally, i.e. varying revs but with a few 7k bursts

Higgy

I'm using mineral oil and limiting myself to 4k  Was planning to do 500miles before changing oil/filter.

I've only drove 85 miles so far :D

Higgy.
