jim21070 2 Posted July 8, 2006 (edited) I put a new cambelt, tensioner, water pump and ECU temperature sensor on my GTi today. Having done so many XU and XUD cambelts in the past I tend not to look at Mr. Haynes Joke Book any more but idly reading the paragraphs on a cambelt change in the Orange version of his book I saw the suggestion that the tensioner should be loosened and then retightened after the engine had been run up to temperature and then allowed to cool for two hours in order to retension the belt after running it in. It's a heck of a lot of work again after reassembling it all to run it in the first place. I have never seen this advice before and have never done it on any XU or XUD I have done in the past. The engine in question is the 8V 1.6 with the "old" type spring tensioner. Should I? Do any of you? Edited July 8, 2006 by jim21070

Miles 331 1 Cars Posted July 8, 2006 Easy answer to this, 'No' Pug don;t do it but a good idea is to turn the engine over a few times check the timing and tension of the belt
