Ignition Timing Quickie

Recommended Posts

methebmxer

Having problems setting up my 1.9 engine I have just fitted. Basically it starts fine and does'nt stall and after a couple minutes the idle settles out at about 1000rpm and seems fairly smooth. So took it for a spin thinking it was fine and as soon as I give it some throttle it pulls away like a milk float. I can literally floor it and it picks up pace no quicker than an old lady on a mobility scooter. Could such extreme power loss be down to the ignition timing as I am gonna take a look at that and hope thats all it is but wondered if anyone had any more sugestions. I am also gonna put new ht leads on and the plugs seem fine. How obvious would it be if one or more cylinder was'nt firing?.

Cheers

if u say it idles smooth, try disconecting one lead at a time and each one should cause a noticable misfire. if one of them doesnt then thats where the problem is.if all cause a missfire, then thats not your problem.

I hope so, I mean it's as it was when I picked it up from a guy in derby after I won it on ebay. It had just come out of a car which was being set up with a 1.6 engine for rallys. It was rebuilt 5000 miles ago with receipt to prove and the guy was quite genuine and helpfull so I trust that the engine is cambelt is correct etc. Somebody on here must know the guy as the farm his mate owns had 205 gti's literally everywhere. Probably 30-40 of em!

Test the throttle switch as described in Tthe Haynes manual (I've posted how on here before).

cheers guys but after some poking about I found that the little pipe that goes from the back of the dizzy to the throttle body had come off. Something so simple that had me pulling my hair out. Pushed it back on and it drives fine now. Just needs final setting up to run smoothly.

205007 I bought the engine off a guy called andy who was having his 205 built up to rally by the owner of the farm. I drove back from derby with the engine in the back of my astra and the windows down trying to not pass out from the oil, petrol and antifreeze fumes! Was a fun trip to say the least.
