Chassis Number

The chassis number on my car is slightly damaged, and as a result i can't register my car. I'm just wondering whether peugeot put it anywhere on the shell other than on the top of the firewall? (i know some cars have it stamped somewhere in the doors or under the carpet)

Hi Al,

Which numbers are damaged. The first part of your number should be VF3741C86. This is the model and engine designation code and should be common to all Australian delivered 205's and verifiable by Peugeot Australia.. The numbers after this form the VIN for the car.

Is it not on the rivetted metal plate on the suspension turret?

Thanks guys. I know the chassis number, but our registration people are paranoid about cars being rebirthed, so they need to ensure every car has the shell it is supposed to... As my number is damaged, they can't need to send the car to forensics to ensure that it is the car i say it is.

The forensics won't look at the car for two months, so i won't have a car. I was kinda hoping peugeot would have stamped the number somewhere else, so i could bypass all the bureaucratic rubbish. (Apparently the plates in the bay aren't acceptable - it actually has to be stamped into the shell)

Jarrod, i've just had another look at what is there, and a couple of the early numbers are damaged as well. Hopefully that person who you put me onto last night will be able to point me in the right direction...

Exactly the same happened to me about a month ago except mine didn't have a stamp at all.

Was taken by the police to be inspected and came up clean after 2 weeks.

I looked everywhere and I'm fairly sure they don't stamp it anywhere else.

(Well that's what my peugeot dealer told me)

The only place is on top of the firewall and the small rivetted plate on the suspension turret.

Thanks guys. Two weeks would be ok, but two months is a joke...

Try holding a small mirror underneath where the VIN number is stamped, the numbers are flipped when looking from underneath but the mirror takes care of that

Or pressing blue tac or plasticine underneath it, it should give you an imprint, the underside seldom gets damaged like the top can
