Phase Two Black Expansion Tank, Min / Max

hi,

 

i have a a phase two 1.9 gti, 205 and it has the black phase two expansion tank on, and i wanting to now wheres the min/max on the tank???

 

not sure what the level should be when cold (half way) as i find if any higher the coolant is spitting out of top.

 

also when my cars has ben running for say like 15 mins the temp rises to 80 on the guage (4th notch) and my mum always mentions how it smells hot.

 

also i have noticed my water pipe which goes the thermostat is rock solid but it goes down in pressure when the car is cooling down!!!!

 

it doesn seem to be using any water maybe leaking it out of top abit!!!!!

 

just concerend that 80 is to high as when i lift bonnet up, its feels and smells hot, but it is it the hot days causing it?

 

 

i ahve smelt my coolant when hot and its smells like hot coolant smell and aslo my low coolant light comes on even when car is cold and somtimes gets better when cars is warm, but sometimes not!!!!!

also whats the best mixture for the coolant??? 50/50??

ha thats just the system depressurising when the engine is off, thats why it makes the pop when you take the cap off the tank, im not sure on the tank too as its a brilliant design being in solid black

i've got mine at about 3/4 full when cold, it used to be a bit more until it spitted out the excess itself from the top. it's been fine ever since.

oh yes what a good idea to have a black bottle. maybe black plastic was cheaper than transparent one by a few pennies.

As pointed out to me eairlier in the year on this site coolant is worse than water at cooling the engine (sounds odd but it is true)

 

So running such a high coolant mix is probably pretty bad in the warmer months at cooling your engine...

 

Just use the lowest concentration of coolant that it reccomends on the back of the bottle.

my gti runs at between slightly under 4 and slightly over 4, it gets upto temp within 5 miles of driving.

 

no pressure in the system tho, a slight wheeze when removing the cap but thats it.

 

i always check water when cold and haf the tank about 2/3rd full.

Hmm,mine runs slightly over 4th notch normally and 5th in traffic.
