What Lsd?

Have to replace the gearbox in the next week or so, would you fit an LSD at the same time? If so where would you buy it from and how much do they cost?

Car is a dedicated track car.

Cheers

I'm sure that the Gripper is UK. Some old boy in a shed somewhere I seem to remember (it's probably a little more technical than that but I do have a article somewhere about the guy making LSD's from scratch for any application). Anyway, I digress. Quaife ATB's are £450+VAT from memory.

And Trans-X also get good reviews from track-monkeys.

yup tran-x are a good make. I think they make a plated version, from memory they are 500 + vat.

I used to have the Quaife and they are good, no dount. I'm trying KAAZ this time (cheaper than transx/gripper), havent got the car running yet to tell the difference.

WMMS have fitted quite a lot of KAAZ diffs to 205s with good reports. Seems to be middle ground between a Quaiffe and a fully plated diff. I would have gone for one of these if I hadn't got such a good deal on a new box inc a quaiffe.

yes I agree, I bought it from WMMS for that very reason of a good middleground, hoping for it to do the business very soon :)

You want a plate diff as your mainly on track, The ATB are a good road upgrade as it stops the diff pin and sun/Planet gear problems with the std diff, Gripper are very good but getting hold of them is another matter, Tran X are good as well and have good back up which can;t be bad!!,

I know of a Tran X one for sale, brand new complete with Diff bolts so drop me a PM if intrested

I've got a Quaife on mine, mostly used for trackdays but it works fine for me.

I got offered it cheap but even though I wasn't really looking for one when it was offered to me so I snapped it up.

I have a Quaife in my trackcar as well and think it's great. Though I've never tried any other LSD in a 205 so have nothing to compare it to. I guess as my car is 99% track use that I should have gone for a Plated LSD but I got a cracking deal on the Quaife that it was too good to pass up. THey are £495 + VAT new and to be fair it seems most of the LSD's are around the same price give or take £50-£75ish

The one thing to consider is that with the Quaife it's fit and forget... the plated LSD's have to have the ramp angles setup depending on how you drive or what kind of use your giving it and they also wear out so have to be overhauled from time to time... so unless your in a full on competative race/rally environment I'd have thought a fit and forget Quaife would be fine really <_<

The other thing if weight is a issue, the Quaife ones are almost twice as heavy as the plate diff, more gear's inside.

My Quaife certainly was put to good use today at Croft, helped no end with traction out of the hairpin.

just to add, i have been looking to get a diff as i will need one when the car is done, and after doing some reserch i found a company called (phantom grip), not sure if anyone has heard of these, but it is basicly a kit that goes in the original diff and turns it into a slipper, you have to play about with the ramp angles to get it to work how you want, and is a hell of a lot cheaper at £200, my mate who has fitted them says they do work, and for the money seem good, but like i say, you have to play about with them a bit, it also doesnt sort the problem of the diff pins,, but, i am going to try one out on my 2.0l xe nova, and if it seems good, depending on how much money i have once the mi is near finished, i may put one in the pug?

if anyone is interested i can let you know the supplyer for these, or type in phantom grip as a search on msn,

hope this may be of use to someone? :D

they work by using the gears as clutchs - effectively meshing the gears "badly" to create friction. they work but not sure how reliable they might be.
