GLPoomobile 958 Posted July 4, 2006 (edited) Due to my paranoia about snapping a cylinder head bolt, I recently soaked them in Plusgas and set about lossening them all off before doing any of the other steps that you'd typically take in the process of removing a head (my reasoning being that if I snapped a bolt it would be game over, so why waste time removing ancillaries etc first!). Anyway, got all the bolts loosened and started trying to remove the timing belt. Without thinking I went and turned the crank pulley bolt to line the timing holes up It was only the smallest amount, probably like a few degrees, and the headbolts and head hadn;t been removed. I had hand tightened the bolts back up after lossening them (so before turning the crank) and I hadn't broken the seal between the head and the block. Am I safe or do you reckon this could have disturbed the liners? Edited July 4, 2006 by GLPoomobile
Kitch 4 Posted July 4, 2006 Should be safe I'd have thought. The liners are generally stuck to the block anyway! If they've moved it will only have been the tinest amount and retorqing the head should reseat them if thats the case. I'd probably carry on and keep fingers crossed. Pug_101 0 Posted July 4, 2006 Did you hear any noise or feel anything strange when turning the crank? I would say everything would be ok.
sorr 0 Posted July 4, 2006 On the four engines I have stripped getting the liners out has been a royal pain in the arse, requiring a good deal of force to move them. I think this force used to move far more than the friction of piston ring on liner so my guess is you will be safe. I would check this by measuring prtrusion before and after a tap back down. Guest rick03054 Posted July 4, 2006 The way the haynes casually mentions it you'd think they were balanced on pinpoints, I was worried about disturbing them but when I got in there I realised they're pretty solidly held (or maybe corroded?) in place. I havn't turned the crank but I turned the engine upside down on a stand with the head off and they didn't budge. AFAIK one of the few parts of the car I havn't sworn at yet!
