Clutch Release Bearing Fallen Off?

Recommended Posts

Kitch

I've had issues in the past with my gearbox working loose by either unwinding the securing bolts, or stripping the threads in the casings. This causes the gear oil to leak from around the O/S d/shaft as it breaks the seal, and the clutch pedal to drop to the floor nearly, with very little effect form the clutch itself.

Recently, this all happened very quickly. Normally you can tell its working loose as it gets harder to put into gear etc. It started pissing oil out and the clutch pedal travel halved.

Got the car back and was delighted to find the lower bolt HASN'T sheared its thread and was able to be tightened again. But now when I start the car, every so often I get a loud clank from the gearbox area.

I thought the release bearing could have slid out of the little forks that secure it, and is spinning when the car is started until it is stopped sharply when it hits one of the forks. You with me still?

I've tried starting with the clutch down and so far no noise.

My question is how far do you have to pull the box off the engine to allow the bearing to dislodge? I know they're little feckers to get in.

Its a BE3 box on an Mi engine

Cheers!

There's a black plastic inspection cover on the front side (behind the radiator) of the gear box

Don't know if it's any good for checking the release bearing though.

AFAIK my box doesn't have that cover. I know which one you mean, I've noticed that all 8v boxes seem to have it, but none of the Mi ones do. Or is that bollocks? lol
