Oil Pressure Too High

Recommended Posts

i was trying to find out why the dash stop light doesent work any more and i noticed that the oil pressure is off the red and up to the first marking without the engine running. i am also not getting an oil temp reading. does anyone know if these are connected or what my problem may be?

All the wires for the instruments you mention go to the infamous Brown multi plug that lives down by the battery tray, on top of the gear box area. I'm assuming your car has one, as some earlier models didnt, though cant remember when they was introduced. The plug has 7 wires going to and from it, and is well known for causing problems. Pull the plug apart and look to see if it's corroded and green on the contacts on both sides of the plug. Not sure why the pressure gauge would be high all the time though, and it's also very common for the wire from the oil temp sender to break, so maybe not the plug in this case, but worth a look.

To check the sender is'nt the problem for the stop light, earth the wire that goes to the sender (it's the smallest one, closest to the alternator)when the ignition is on and the light should come on if everything else is ok.

Yep - I've experienced similar problems, the ribbon connector behind the instrument binnacle had burnt out in part! My remedy was to simply trace the wiring and wire direct avoiding the cr@ppy ribbon!! HTH

thanks for that, i will try these later. it is a mi16 so the brown multi plug has been choped and changed,

i have tried a different clock dash,

the ribon behind was a little damaged in one corner.

the pressure is off the red and up to the first mark without the engine running and goes up to normal when it is started.

If the gauge has swung to its furthest reach, then you have the sensor wire earthing out somewhere, just track that single wire

Sounds like the guage, has the dials been changed at any point? If it's working when running though, i would'nt be to worried, just concern your self with getting the light working. Are both the centre stop light and the little oil light in the top corner on the pressure gauge not working? if both are not working, then lessens the chance of it being blown bulb. Do like i & others have said, and earth the connector out with ignition on. If oil/stop lights comes on, clean up the terminal on the sender and try again. If still not working, then replace sender.

The oil temp wires seem to live on the edge! They run down the back of the enging inside a platic sleeve, and always seem to be clinging to life by a thread when i've had dealing with them. Wonder if yours maybe lost it's protective sleeve in the conversion or got damaged? It would'nt take much! Again, like someone else said, try earthing out to see if the gauge moves. If so, and you've earth'd it from the very end of the wire, then it's probably the sender.

just had a look and there is no wire from the sender under the exhaust, also when the ignition is switched on the coolant and fuel warning lights do not come on. i will try all the above and hopefully sort it out

The sensor below the exhaust (in the sump? ) is the oil temp sender. The oil pressure sender is on the forward face of the block slightly under the drivers side edge of the inlet manifold. (This picture shows it just, low pressure stop switch with mushroom pressure sender behind it)

If the wires for these two have been crossed this could also be the cause of part of the problem.

Graham.

i have earthed the oil switch and pressure sender switches and with one sender the oil pressure gauge goes to full, with the switch sensor nothing happens. i followed the wire to the plug on the dash and earthed that and still nothing happened. if i earth the temp switch the red light on the gauge and the stop light go on. that is the only time i have seen the stop lamp light work.

i have a push button start switch and no ignition key but cant see this being the problem.

i take it the low oil pressure switch earths when the pressure is low so would i be correct in fitting an additional earth from the switch to a light / buzzer with the other connecting going to a live from the ignition switch?
