Strange Noises

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've got a slight problem. At around 2000rpm in 3rd gear i get a strange loud humming noise.

I did have this problem a few months ago, where the rear bolt connecting the gearbox to the engine came loose and fell out leaving a 1inch gap.

I bolted this all back up and sorted new gearbox oil out.

Now the problem has come back but all bolts seem to be secured and gearbox is flush with engine.

I've got brand new group N mounts so can rule this out.

I'm thinking possibly a blown exhaust manifold? I've got a magnex 4 branch.

Any other ideas? Maybe a new gearbox needed as it could be damaged from when it droped all its oil.

cheers

Some more news:

Seems to do it in every gear now. Especially when cruising in 5th and releasing the throttle (thus engine slowing the car down).

Its like a grinding/deep whirrrrring noise.

The sound goes when i dip the clutch so i suppose this rules out wheel bearings.

I've seen loads of pugs where the gearbox and engine have come apart and nine times out of ten the clutch center and the release bearing are ovalled and also the rivets shear.

the gearbox should be fine but the clutch plate and bearing are likely to be knackered.

cheers mate...

So i can rule out Driveshafts being dead if it does not do it when clutch is dipped or coasting in neutral.

So i just need to get a new clutch and release bearing.
