Exhaust Downpipe

i'm after advice initially, then i'll be posting a wanted ad...

 

the baffles in the middle box broke up, leaving my car sounding really chav, so i bought a middle section, standard, and already have a stainless back box, (on there when i bought it, sounds canny).

 

i've taken the backbox off cos i've just replaced the beam, but the middle section is rusted onto the place where the downpipe joins it. i cannot get it off. :D

 

so i'm thinking, i'm not going to be able to get it off, and the car feels pretty slow to me, and i've heard that 1.6's can lose a lot of power through a cracked manifold. so is it worth trying to locate a complete mani/downpipe from someone here, or are they like rocky horses poop, or vastly expensive.

 

either way, like i said, i need advice.

 

any help greatly appreciated. cheers :)

On mine the system joins at the manifold and back box only. I suspect that the join you think is rusted may well be a weld. An exhaust place would cut this for you and join your middle section to the downpipe (it might be hard to keep it from blowing though).

 

If your manifold was cracked I think you would be able to hear it (no need to change it otherwise). I got the whole system from the manifold back second hand but very clean for £20.

Earlier cars have a three piece system which splits in front of the centre box as well as for the back box. You have the later two piece system.

hmmm my manifold is blowing big time, although i know its not cracked as ive replaced it once before... probly just a gasket, but my 1.6 is the slowest ive ever driven, even though its a nice new engine... would the blowy mainfold really make that big a difference?

its f reg, 89. and the exhaust defo comes in seperate bits, cos the front of the mid section is joined to the downpipe with a clamp.

 

it seems to me it would be easier to replace everything including the manifold,(cos it feels flat) but if thats the most expensive option then it will be just the downpipe. i seriously doubt if i can save the downpipe where it meets the mid section.

 

when i say it feels flat, i might just be spoiled by the faster cars i've driven. what would you compare a 1.6 to? cos they say it should nearly keep u with a 1900, but its nowhere near as quick as other 1.9's or even 1.6's i've driven/been in.
