Wheel Bearing Replaced Still Got The "hum"

Recommended Posts

My pug had developed a serious humming at all speeds. At Cadwell in Nov I found the only time it disappeared was on left handers. It's been off the road since then and I thought I'd change the NS bearing. I've also replaced the tyres all round and just took her out today. Straight line hum has gone but the slightest bit of right lock brings it back. it has got ecc. top mounts and no interior so it is showing it up that much more.

So my thoughts at the moment are maybe the new bearing is faulty? Has anyone every had this problem?

It is so definitely coming from the left front and only when you turn right that I can't think of anything else it could be.

If anyone has an old 1.9 hub in reasonable nick maybe I could buy it and get to the bottom of it.

any thoughts /suggestions very gratefully received.

change the other bearing , i had this on mine , it stopped on turing right so i did the drivers bearing , but it still did it so i changed the other one and bingo the outer race was pitted (causing the humming) .

pain in the arse to do though

kind of hoped that wouldn't be the reply :-( the noise is so definitely on the left side of car though? Do you recall if your noise was from the NS when you changed the NS bearing ?

I made this mistake, I was convinced it was the n/s bearing that was gone. Turned out to be the o/s side one instead, well at least I have two new wheel bearings now!!

Lol this was what mine was like for about a year. I thought it was a driveshaft as it stopped humming on left lock, but it sounded much like a wheel bearing so I swapped the passenger side wheel bearing and it didn't make a difference.

Only when I swapped the other side did it go nice and quiet!

completely weird isn't it ? not only would I have bet a lot of money I'd got the side right logically it seemed to make sense too - n/s front takes most of load on course with mainly Rhanders ! You learn something every day!

so in future i think the best advice is to change both! Mine had only done 55,000 miles and not a lot of track use either ! (car came from Jersey - guess you can't drive that far!)

I suppose mine had a better excuse as it had done about 170k and 50ish trackdays!!!! Normally its the lhs I'm always working on (have replaced wheel bearings on this side before) but in the time I've known the car (since 60k) its had the original rhs wheelbearing.

170k is remarkably good really, in my experience they normally both go at about 130k on 1.9s.

My Xantia V6 needed a new one at 65k!
