Stripped Front Hub Threads

Recommended Posts

Guest TSL 333

Due to the constant on/ off of my front wheels on my 1.6 GTI, I have strippped the thread on the hub. The wheel nuts are fine (just bought a load from the scrappy so I know that it is the hub.) 2 of the 4 are stripped - FACK!!!

So, to rectify the problem, I assume I am looking at a new hub. My local scrappy has a new (you know what I mean) 1.6 GTI so can this be done easily. The hub replacement is a 3/4 spanner job in the Haynes manual so I do not fancy it. Any suggestions?

I did the same thing, damn annoying isnt it!

Not too hard,

First take the brake caliper off. You then have to take the hub nut off to withdraw the driveshaft, then take the wishbone and track rod end out. Then open the back of the hub up by prising it with a 5/16 allan key, this lets you knock the hub off the strut.

Really isn't that hard job. Have a bit confidence in you. Its the only way you'll learn.

The way i would do it. Crack the 30/32mm hub nut.

Caliper off, and tie out the way so no damaged pipes.

Track rod end off, may need to place jack under the rod incase the nut spins. - leave semi connected till you've undone the rest of the bolts.

Then bottom ball joint. Use hammer/bar/ball joint seperator.

Once out, remove drive shaft from hub, try not to pull out from the gear box if passenger side.

The strut to hub bolt loosen, and then use 8mm sump plug key and fit into the back of the clamp of the hub, and hammer down with hammer.

And fitting is reverse of removal...

Managed it today guys and what a relatively easy task it was too!!! I got the hub and a full set of nuts for £30 from the scrappy, who to be fair, did lend a hand in taking off the old parts. Other than that, my brother and I managed fine - just in time for Knockhill tomorow - woo hoo!!!

Thanks again, as always for your help!!!

Best regards,
