Battery Cable

Recommended Posts

going to get all my wiring for the mi/emerald conversion tommorow and thought i might as well get the battry done while i am there. but as i am putting the battery in the boot i am unsure what rating or size dia it needs to be. should i just go for the largest i can get ? to be safe or is that overkill. it states it can take 415 amps is that too much? that is for 14.5 mm dia cable

has anyone done this ?

The bigger the cable the less voltage drop there will be along it's length, so the more volts will reach the stsrter.

415amp is VERY big though. 300amp is what a lot of people use and even thats a bit on the big side IMO.

Seem to recall that the cable from the boot of my car is somewhere around 14-15mm dia.

If you can get it in, go for the biggest cable you can!

Starter motors draw HUUUUUge amounts of current afterall!

Im using 380 Amp cable as that was the closest to 300amp cable the local truck factors had on a roll. Cost around £20 for 6 Metres or so.

A starter on load draws up to 200amps. A 15 year old worn out one may draw a bit more!

16mm squared cable is the one to use, but make sure its decent quality stuff

No such thing as too big for a battery cable! No harm in some extra copper, just make sure the connection to the cable are as good as the cable.

P.S. There is a discounter linked to the forum for electrical bits, they should be a good place to talk to as they build race car harnesses.

I'm running 0AWG wire just for my amplifiers. 52mm² ought to be big enough!

start by checking the SAE rating for your battery, that will give you a rough idea of cable rating required
