Recommended Posts

Right

Need a little help here, My 1.9 gearbox has rung the diff and i have a spare good mi16 gearbox to put into her. The only prob is that my box was a be3 and the mi box is be1.

Anyone got any pointers or a step by step guide on the problems on changing linkages etc.

Problems i think i will have.

Linkages wrong?

Gearstick needs changing to lift up on on the 405?

Reverse light switch?

Any help on these topics will be appricated?

Cheers

Richy

Being an mi16 box makes things a little easier, as all mi16 boxes (be1 and be3) have the be3 clutch mechanism, so you can fit your exisitng clutch cable to it.

The linkages should go straight on too. You might have to alter the angle of the joints a bit but other than that should be a straight swap.

The connector on the reverse switch is different (2-pin plug on the BE3, 2 seperate spade connectors on the BE1). You can either swap the switches over, or cut the plug off and crimp some spades onto the wires.

At a push you can use the BE3 gearstick. You can still select all the gears, but there obviously won't be the cable mechanism to stop you from pushing it too far and selecting reverse when you want first. Otherwise you need a BE1 gearstick and reverse cable.

You will have to change the gear selector arm on the gearbox for the one from your 205 box.

The 405 will be the wrong shape, its the small flat one nearer the blockmating face thatneeds swapping, held on by a double roll pin but becareful as getting it wrong means you lose some of the gears if you're not careful.

When I did this I put the box in gear & it was fine. Check you can get all the gears before you start fitting the gearbox into your car though by moving the selectors around.

Graham.

I've just removed my BE-1 box, and there's a funny spring loaded sensor type thing on top.... what's it for? ;)

The cable from this then goes through the bulk head. It's basically where the breather is on a BE-3 box, and I have no idea what it does, as I have a speedo drive in the normal place, and my reversing sensor is where it should be!! :)

The other end goes to the gearstick and stops you from accidentally selecting reverse unless you pull up the collar.

the funny spring loaded sensor type thing is the end of the lift reverse cable. If you unscrew it you will find you can get into reverse without lifting the collar.

Ah, so that's what it is. :)

Think mine needs adjusting as it fails to work. I can get reverse without lifting up my collar!!

Chris, graham has just done that this week. I think he managed to retain the Be1 cable, although he used a section from a 203 to make it work!

Otherwise, i believe you will need the pedal from a later car, as the cable attaches differently. If you want to do it properly it would be wise to spend $50 on a new cable as well. Everything else should be ok...

Thanks for the replys lads, got her all done with no probs, cheers.

The difference the mi16 box made to the acceleration of the mi16 engine is mental, i was running the 1.9 standard box.

Anyway took her to the track yesterday and the crank bearings went !!!

Its one thing after another with my car at the moment.

Just another quick question, the speedo cable doesnt fit as the drive is different, what should i do? Can i put a full new 405 cable in, will it fit the other end?

Cheers in advance/

Can't you just take the drive out of the be3 and put it in your be1 box?

Think they fit iirc.
