Headlamp Glass, How Is It Meant To Be Attached?

Recommended Posts

d-9

Sorting out the headlamp aim for the mot and wobbled the glass, wich came off in my hand :S

How is it meant to be attached and are there any sealants or glues that I might have that will fix it on? If not will duck tape do it?

fitted a headlight to a mates car lastnight... walked round the car and 2 seconds later i hear "crash" ;)

wierd one because if you use super glue then it may not be waterproof and if you use sealent it may not be strong enough ;)

The glass is just held in with sealant, there's no retaining clips or anything. Just clean off the mould and dirt from the old sealant and stick the glass back in with araldite or PU seam sealant. I've tried silicone sealant as well but it didn't hold for long.

Duck tape won't be very good for that kind of thing because the adhesive seems to dry up when exposed to weather and soon comes unstuck.

I just use clear sealant, done it a few times now and seems to hold up ok.

well at least im not the only one to lose headlight glasses on the 205/309s! i normally have plenty of spares but would imagine clear sealant would do if allowed to set properly

I silicone sealed mine back in. I went for a good thrash about a week later came to a junction and stopped abruptly and theres a massive bang then a smash. The lens had come unstuck worked loose and when i planted the anchor it flew out onto the road. Luckily no one was in front of me!

It could have been messy :D

If you want them affixed on there till the end of mankind..use Gripfill, takes a while to go off though.

As the old saying goes, if in doubt..Gripfill it out!

I took one of the headlamps off my F-plate when I put clear indicators on and there were 3 little metal retaining clips securing the glass on. It was sealed on with some glue/sealant type stuff so the clips were juyst a failsafe. I've not seen any since that have the clips on so maybe it was an early design and they've all just fallen off by now...
